The Role
I loved my time at Mattel. I'm very happy I got the opportunity to work there for a year.
I worked in the CP creative team and I felt valued by all of them. I'm still in contact with most of them now.
My manager was very supportive and I felt comfortable to go to him with any issues or problems.
I never felt overwhelmingly busy on a daily basis unless I had big events coming up or multiple projects going on at once. All interns received training to help us improve our time management and prioritisation which helped me cope with my workload.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility on my placement. However I actually would have liked more once I'd settled into my role.
Coming back to university I feel a lot more confident in my abilities and I've developed a lot of valuable business and creative skills. I believe my experience working at a global company specifically will help me when applying for future graduate schemes/ jobs.
The Company
The atmosphere was fairly quiet most of the time. It would've been nice to have more of a buzz and excitement internally when new products were launched or when we ran charity events.
My placement was very well organised by HR.
Mattel gave us a lot of training opportunities. The insights discovery programme specifically stuck out of me as something very useful to help my work style and interaction with colleagues. However as I worked in the design team I would have valued indesign, photoshop or illustrator training opportunities which weren't offered.
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
Unfortunately Mattel doesn't offer graduate schemes which I would have definitely applied for.
The Culture
Most of the interns at Mattel got on really well and we all went on nights out together or for drinks after work occasionally. I was also lucky enough to go out for team meals every so often.
I lived at home whilst on placement outside of Maidenhead so didn't experience the cost of living.
There isn't many places to go out in Maidenhead but when the interns went out we would go to Windsor or Reading which are fairly close.
There was a few opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work but not many.
