The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship at Savills. The internship opportunity opened my eyes to different areas of real estates and I found it to be a very beneficial experience. The work that I was involved with was varied and dynamic, developing my skills and confidence vastly. There were also lots of social and networking opportunities.
I felt as a valued member of the team during my time at Savills. The work that I was given was interesting and meaningful. The work that I was doing was benefiting our clients and was actually having an impact on the business. I was also included in team events, such as after work drinks, and was always made to feel welcome.
I always felt very well supported by my team and line manager. I was encouraged to work out problems myself, however, I always knew that I had their support and encourage should I need it. My line manager gave me projects in order to stretch and develop my skills, but was always there for support.
I remained busy throughout my time at Savills, which I preferred as the less busy days went really slowly! Although I was always busy, there were no points that I felt overwhelmed or worried that I would not be able to complete work. I usually left the office at 6pm, which meant I had plenty of time to myself in the evenings.
I was given real responsibility from day 1 and I was working on projects that had a real impact on clients and the business. I was responsible for preparing presentations for key clients, which I found to be really good for my personal development. I was pleased that my line manager trusted my ability to lead on a number of projects and presentations.
I vastly developed my understanding of real estate and how a large scale real estate firms on a day-to-day basis. Although my university degree does not directly relate to Real Estate or Property, I found that I developed a number of transferable skills that will benefit me in any future career.
The Company
There was a great general atmosphere at Savills and the office was always buzzy. It is a lively and fast paced environment, which I really enjoyed. Everyone was chatty and friendly, and it was easy to make conversation with people around you. There was a good social scene also, with people making the effort to go out for drinks after work.
The placement was extremely well organised and I can’t fault the set up of this internship. The HR team was in contact communication and I felt well prepared going into the internship. Furthermore, the HR team organised a number of networking and skills session events, which were beneficial to our development.
I felt well invested in. My line manager was focused on my personal development and there were a number of events geared at our personal development.
There are many graduate opportunities at Savills and I hope that my time spent there as part of this internship will stand me in good stead when applying. My team and line manager were very encouraging that I apply for the graduate scheme and have been supporting me through the process.
The Culture
I found the social scene amongst the interns and graduates to be really great at Savills. We would often socialise together at lunch times, as well as going out for drinks and dinner after work. We all supported each other as a group and I always felt that I could turn to fellow interns with questions or problems.
The cost of living was high, but as I go to university here, I was always expecting this and luckily had my student accommodation where I could stay. Commuting to work each day was relatively expensive, as well as buying lunch and going out for drinks after work. Also, don’t expect a high salary for this internship, but the experience was worth the high cost of living.
Good nightlife! Lots of bars and restaurants nearby.
Yes, lots of opportunities once you join the firm as a graduate. This mainly consists of sports teams and events.
