The Role
Being quite shy definitely affected how much I got out of the experience. I sat more in the background while my group got on with the task. By the end, after I was more familiar with the group I got more involved and felt more valued.
We had a supervisor who watched our group but she didn't say or do anything much unless we pushed hard for her to answer a question we had about the task.
The morning was very relaxed but the afternoon was much more busy. We were put into groups and had to complete tasks for a client in a very short space of time.
It felt like our group had a lot of responsibility because we weren't told anything about how to go about the tasks we had. We were just given a short case study to look at then had to present back to the client within a couple of hours.
I learnt that I need to push more for my opinions to be heard as business is very competitive and you won't get anywhere if you stay in the background.
The Company
It felt quiet but friendly. There were graduates there as well as senior members of staff who were very happy to answer any questions and took a general interest in us. Most of the day was a relaxed environment but we were also given a taste of what it's like to work there and have deadlines to meet in short spaces of time. This is when the environment changed to seem very serious but we still all had a good time.
The day was set up very well. It was a long day, starting at 9:00 and finishing at 19:30. The company provided us with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks along with tea and coffee. The morning was laid out well so we were taking part in activities which involved getting to know the other students on the insight day. We were then split into different groups and given a case study to later prepare for a presentation to the client. This gave a real insight into what sort of thing you'd be doing every day in the job. Finally a couple of members of staff talked about their area in the firm.
Being an insight day there wasn't much time for any training but I talked to the members of staff about preparing for the ACA professional exams. I was told that as well as support from the company they give you time off from work in order to give you more time to study for the exams. I found this a very good point as many companies expect you to continue to work alongside studying for the professional exams.
I am through to the first round interview which hasn't yet taken place. I have applied for an internship in audit and I think Ernst & Young would be a good, friendly company to work for.
The Culture
Everyone there was very sociable and easy to get on with. Everyone was in the same position as me do we had a lot in common.
I only attended an insight day so I wasn't there long enough to comment on this.
