The Role
I really enjoyed the 8 weeks that I spend in the Lidl UK office in Wimbledon. My department was very welcoming and integrating from the beginning on. Three weeks before my start, my contact person already informed me about the rough training plan that she prepared for me and asked me to let her know about anything else that would be interesting to me to add it to the plan. So all in all, the 8 weeks were very diverse and organized! No week was like the other.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. When I told them that I will write my bachelor thesis in the HR department, they even organized a spontaneous week in the HR department here. They were also very interested in the projects that I have experience so far with and were in general very open-minded. They also always appreciated my work and the exercises I had.
When I was busy with a certain task, my supervisor always asked me in between if I was getting on well or if I would need any help. When I got exercises that were more difficult, my supervisor supported me and gave me some tips how to proceed. After half of the internship, my supervisor organized a catch up to talk about how the training plan worked out so far and to give some feedback.
I was very busy in a positive way. I actually always had something on my desk that needed to be done throughout the week and even if I didn't my supervisor did not leave me bored and gave me something to do. The work I did was always very doable, sometimes more exciting than other times. However, tasks that were needed and made sense to do.
The tasks I had were rather small and Excel-sheet-filling jobs. However I was also sometimes given tasks that required some extent of responsibility. For example, I went to the store several times to buy sample products for the new App that my department developed.
I definitely refreshed my Excel skills and also my skills in creating PowerPoints and present them. Especially the week in the HR department was very interesting for me because I could compare it very well to HR department in Lidl Germany. However, I will probably not be able to apply the experience I had here in my degree studies in International business.
The Company
In general, the atmosphere in my office was very warm, welcoming, informal and positive. Although everybody was very busy with the Christmas campaign that needed full attention, everybody was still in good mood. Private chats in the kitchen or some small talks about the weekend never came too short.
The internship was very well organized. My supervisor sent me a very detailed plan about the first week of getting to know everybody and everone's responsibilities and about all the projects I could get involved with. The good thing was, that my work really matched with the plan I received and that I always had the chance to ask for something to add to the plan if I saw something that interested me.
Very nice was, that they let me practise my presentation I had to give to Uni a few weeks later and gave me feedback.
I will definitely stay within the organisation as I am having a dual study contract with them already in Germany (dual study is a system in Germany where firms and corperate state Unis called DHBW cooperate. Students change every three months between studying at the DHBW and working in their company of contract.) The general future employment prospects within Lidl are very appealing because you have lots of opportunities to change departments and lots of benefits like Homeoffice in Germany.
The Culture
There were two other interns from Germany during my time at Lidl UK. Also, there were two trainees also from Germany in the HR department. So there was actually always somebody there to spend the weekend with or to meet for dinner or lunchtime. Many departments also go to a pub on a Friday evening.
London and Wimbledon in general are very expensive. The Airbnb was not very cheap although it was rather small and simple. However, thanks to my salary and the daily allowance I got from Lidl Germany, I had no problems to finance my internship here. If you want to do some sports after work, there are also plenty of options for fitness clubs around the office. The YMCA is one of the cheapest ones and has a special offer for students with 80 £ for 4 months.
Very close to London.
Fitness center right in front of my Airbnb.
