The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It is the perfect opportunity to combine academics and work. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to implement and test theories from university. However, more importantly in my opinion, the organisation has a supportive structure and placement students are given as little or as much guidance as they need. This is very beneficial for growth and development. The night life is exceptional and there is always an opportunity to network with colleagues.
FDM has a family like culture. This culture creates a supportive environment that ensures you feel valued. For myself, I would say that I felt most appreciated and valued due to those within my home office. The Glasgow office has an exceptional culture. It is very close knit and welcoming to new company.
Support and guidance was always offered to anyone who needed it. I had access to a wide range of managers working across numerous departments which again was advantageous as they all possessed expertise in different areas. However, more specifically, my line manager has been very helpful throughout my placement and continues to help wherever possible. She resolves issues promptly and is very thorough to ensure they remain resolved.
I was very busy. I had the opportunity to work amongst numerous departments. I was assigned responsibilities and projects from each individual department. This kept me very busy and ensured I was highly involved. It also acted as opportunity to understand where my strengths and interests lie which can better prepare myself for the future.
I was allocated a lot of responsibility. I would say that one of the biggest pros of a placement with FDM Group is the opportunity to gain real working responsibility. If you manage to complete tasks efficiently you will be rewarded with greater responsibility, responsibility that you will rarely be granted within other organisations whilst as an intern or an industrial placement student.
Working within recruitment subconsciously developed numerous skills which will prove to be advantageous during and after my degree. I am more aware of interview structures, what makes a good answer and equally what makes a bad answer. This will prove to be useful after my studies whilst on the graduate market and is all also useful for dissertation studies. There is the opportunity to learn and develop IT skills such as SQL and Excel VBA. This is extremely helpful for those who are not studying an IT related degree, as it expands your skills and offers a competitive edge on the graduate market.
