The Role
Working at EY in the Cambridge office was not what I first thought it would be. The teams I worked in were relaxed and therefore the seniors were very approachable as well as driving audit efficiency. There were social events to go to and you felt part of the office from day one. With the office being small it was mer personable, and was very easy to get to know people from other service lines and other tiers.
Straight away you were put in a role of responsibility, with installed the feeling that they knew I was good enough to be there and that they valued the work I was doing. Also, the work was valuable to the team to help complete the audit.
Immediately you meet your buddy, councillor and other colleagues who are there specifically to support you. Knowing you have a buddy who is your informal point of contact was reassuring if I had any questions he would answer them straight away.
Eery day I was on a client, therefore I had lots of work to be completing. once I had completed one, I would ask for more and there would be plenty of things to be doing.
They don't joke, you get given responsibility in the first week. Completing workbooks for the team on clients which need to be done to a high standard.
Working in a team and how to approach certain people in the office coming from different cultures has helped me hen working in groups at university as I go to an international uni.
The Company
The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, however it was clear that people were there to get the work done and done to a high standard. People were always there to offer assistance and to help each other out. I wasn't int he office much as I was always out on the client site, but even in the client sites within the Audit team it was a chilled atmosphere with the main focus of driving audit efficiency.
The internship was very well organised. As soon as we got to the office people were there to tell us what we would be doing and how we would get the best out of the experience. Some things I would recommend for future, is that they brief their buddys a little more on what they can an can't give the interns. Also more of a choice of what part of audit they do. as we were randomly split up into GPS or corporate. More information of what the day to day job entails prior to starting would be a better way to prepare the interns.
They always found time to help me improve my knowledge of audit and why we do certain tests. Also, they would aid me in my excel skill making sure I was fully comfortable at carrying out testing in excel workbooks.
Company Parties/Events
Extremely appealing. The opportunities are endless at EY. You can gain experience in a number of fields if you choose to put yourself out there. Also the support in further improving yourself as well as working towards a professional qualification is rare in a company therefore is would be very appealing to work for EY in future.
The Culture
There was always something going on each Friday. Whether it be drinks with fellow interns, an event with your service line, or your manager taking you our for lunch. They make sure you work hard but on the weekends they make sure you play hard too. Getting the balance is key to make sure that you are productive when coming into work and I feel that the Cambridge office at EY do that perfectly.
I lived from home so the cost of living was small for me. However Cambridge is an expensive city so socialising can be quite costly. Luckily there were a few interns who go to university there so knew the cheaper places to go to.
As it is a small city, the nightlife isn't great. But it is less then an hour train to London where you have everything you could want in terms of nightlife there.
Yes, there are many groups you could join from culture to sport. They held events in cricket and football in the six weeks I was there which we could get involved in. This helps build bonds with fellow colleagues and aid the team morale in the workplace.
