The Role
As challenging as this placement is, it really does give you the skills and experience in which you can take on to any other type of job. It was tough, but very rewarding.
I worked in several different restaurants during my time at Pizza Express and every restaurant was different, again giving you a real insight to working after university, everyone is different and people all work in different ways.
I feel some of my peers had better support and guidance throughout the placement, however there is so much support at head office to reach out too if you feel like you need it.
Everyday was a challenge but I thrived from this.
As Assistant Manager, you are the point of call when the RM isn't around, or even if they are. You learn to run every aspect from opening and unlocking the doors in the morning, to closing and locking the doors at night, and everything in between, you manage a team of diverse people, you learn to deal with tough situations and you learn to make pizza!
Skills for life. No doubt about it.
The Company
Depends on how well we were doing for the period, you have very tight labour and sales forecasts you have to adhere too.
I think there were some gaps, but we have fed this back so I imagine this placement will get better and better as the years go on.
They invested in us massively, we were down in the talent academy in London very frequently catching up and getting training and giving feedback. The talent academy support was phenomenal.
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Free pizza! and if you hit your targets the bonus was great, I received over £1000 of bonus over the year as our restaurant was doing really well. This was really motivating. Future employment- I have been offered a role with the company for upon graduation.
The Culture
When we had training events in London yes! we've all kept in contact also.
I had to relocate and this was costly, but the wage Is very reasonable and higher than most industrial placement wages.
Working in hospitality you tend to work the social hours, weekends, evenings etc.
