The Role
The Work placement at Cummins Darlington was really enjoyable. there was plenty of variation and i got to experience every aspect of the job that i could have asked for.
Once i settled in to the company and was able to start working on real projects, i felt very valued by everyone around me.
The support i received was flawless. Any issues, or thoughts i had was easy to take to my supervisor and there are plenty of other people supporting you when your supervisor isnt available.
i was given responsibility early on and this seemed a little daunting to begin with - however, as long as i effectively managed my time (which i learnt to do here) it was a good balance.
A large amount of responsibility is given to the placement students - you are treated more like a graduate than a student. The vast amount of support makes this achievable however.
Not only will the technical skills i have developed aid me in my final year, cummins also helped to develop my soft skills, such as communication, presenting and professionalism.
The Company
The general atmosphere is relatively chilled out and friendly. A lot of work takes place with fairly regular coffee/tea breaks.
The work placement was well organised, with introductory weeks and "graduation" ceremonies. As well as regular student meetings, 1 to 1s and soft skill development.
I believe a lot was invested in my training and development - i was able to take time to explore other departments as well attend training seminars and spend time studying.

The Culture
Regular socials are organised within the student group and within department teams.
Darlington is a relatively cheap place to live and the surrounding areas arent too bad. i decided to commute around an hour each day, living nearer to york. These prices were still not bad. Around £250 a month rent.
Darlington Nightlife was okay - is very easy to catch the train to york or newcastle.
Plenty of oppurtunities with regular emails going round for organised and subsidised events.
