About You
The firm was fantastic, it really helps you to see the inner workings of an international law firm. Furthermore, it allows you to understand the culture of the firm. Having attended the insight at the end of the firm's financial year - there was a chance to really grasp the social side. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The firm and its team constantly approached me to ask for help, to involve me in activities and generally to make me feel comfortable in the firm. Its a huge step walking into a firm like Baker McKenzie, but everyone helps make that step less daunting.
Throughout the insight, lawyers provided me with work and helped me to understand the purpose of the work. There wasn't much work I would consider mundane as they like to throw you into the real world working environment. Don't worry though, they actually guide and support you all the way.
As a student of law, it really helps to see how the academic work is put into practical application. People assume sometimes that a law degree doesn't reflect the real law that you deal with, but it really does. I was asked to research academically, the philosophy of contract writing, which was fascinating. I have arrived back to my degree with my head solidly screwed on and ready to get my degree!
The Company
On the first day they provided a timetable of all activities relevant to the entire cohort. We spent a lot of time in our individual seats within our departments. Our supervisors would ensure we had guidance and knew what we were doing. There were no qualms with leaving the work to attend the organised events by the graduate recruitment team. They held a number of presentations for the different sectors that Baker McKenzie work within, and actually, it was fantastically run.
When I intitially received my offer for the scheme, I was worried that I would get there and that people might be trying to compete for places. However, from day one the graduate recruitment team helped us to understand this isn't about competing, its about collaborating with the joint venture in mind. We were a team, we were helping one another and we (in the end) became very close friends. This really helped me to know that Baker McKenzie was the firm for me.
The firm helped us throughout to gain the necessary skills we needed to do the very basics of the work asked of us. If there were any issues, you could ask someone for help, that way you're gradually developing your skills.
The insight helped to secure in my mind that I want to work for Baker McKenzie.
The culture at Baker McKenzie is fantastic! I cannot recommend the firm enough, just based on the culture. It is very unique, friendly and altogether warming. I really enjoyed my time there because the culture is such a big element.
I found that the insight provided me with the surety that I want to work in the firm.
Everything Else
The firm pays considerably well for the time spent there, it is unfortunate that London is so costly. However, the money was sufficient to cover all costs.
There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people in the firm and Baker McKenzie pushes networking as one of the biggest parts of being a lawyer. It's important to be sociable and meet new people.
There were plenty of social events for us to attend, and during these events we had a chance to meet a lot of new people within the firm.
The firm take part in an inter-law firm football tournament, which sounds really fun. I also found out about socials that the firm go on, and there is great emphasis on working to live not living to work.
Absolutely, all in all Baker McKenzie is a fantastic firm to do a scheme with. They are at the top of their game and understand the needs of the client when getting the work done to the highest standard. The firm pride themselves on culture, but don't slack on quality. The people are amazing, and always willing to talk to you. I would recommend this to you.
