About You
It was extremely enjoyable as it was a comprehensive insight scheme, ensuring all the students were exposed to the real inner workings of the firm. Be it shadowing trainee solicitors to discussing the billing system of the firm with senior partners. Alongside some amazing social events from the London eye to a restaurant meal.
Definitely felt valued, all the staff were extremely accommodating and open to answering any questions and helping you find the room you were in if you felt lost. Also during the shadowing period was given substantive work which trainee required then talked through the what i had done correctly and the value i had added to the overall project.
There was ample support during the scheme for all aspects from the corporate presentation to networking. Grad recruitment ensured everyone was prepped to help out, so even when shadowing there were tasks prepped for us to complete and assistance if you were stuck with anything. Baker naturally has a very supportive and nurturing environment.
There was a personal development session which was extremely useful in developing presentation and communication skills, it was delivered by an expert and was extremely interactive and invaluable. Also the commercial presentation developed everyones commercial awareness and presentation skills, with great feedback and confidence-boosting advice from the in-house associate panel.
The Company
The insight was extremely structured. During the initial welcome breakfast we were each handed an agenda for the few days. It was clear and laid out what we would be doing every hour of the scheme, which was followed to the letter. Also during the breakfast each event or aspect of the insight was clarified and given reasoning to why it would be useful to us as first year students.
The general atmosphere was extremely positive, borderline overly happy and enthusiastic for a corporate machine. Everyone was extremely helpful and willing to help with any questions or queries. The staff allowed us to ask very specific questions, receiving honest answers from the most senior partners within the form on the realities of working in city law and the demands
The firm invested a lot within us during a short amount of time. They initially developed our writing skills with a CV and CL presentation and task; preparing us well for upcoming vacation scheme applications. Then the commercial presentation developed key competencies for commercial law. Finally the professional development session really developed everyones presentation and communication skills immensely, with expert advice.
The role was excellent for seeing how working at Baker McKenzie would be. The shadowing of a trainee and associate in a specific department was extremely useful, it exposed one to the day to day work of a commercial lawyer, and the fast paced environment and demands of the role within the firm
The insight was useful to an extent in helping understand the culture. Due to the limited timeframe and numerous events one could not completely gauge the culture of the firm. However, the interactions that I did have provided some insight, and the shadowing experience highlighted the working culture and the office design and collaborative effort.
The content of the day was extremely useful in helping me personally decide my future career, as this was my first insight into an international city law firm. And gave me a plethora of angles to consider, but perhaps most critically it allowed me to see the substantive work carried out by commercial lawyers through the shadowing which helped decide the future career I am currently pursuing.
