The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at MSD. This year allowed me not only to gain vital experience in the working world, but I also had a great cohort of students around me which made the experience memorable and enjoyable. This was also aided by the wonderful structure of the industrial placement programme at MSD which allowed me to learn about many parts of business whilst I was there.
The way I was treated by my colleagues was exemplary as I felt like I was part of one large family. I was always advised to ask questions and I was always asked for my opinion on business critical decisions. They always used to mentor me so that when I finished, I could take away many transferable skills.
Support and guidance were always available whenever I needed it from the senior management team or my line manager. I would have weekly meetings with my line manager where i was able to raise any issues and plan for the week ahead effectively. We also had meetings with senior managers, who would involve us in large projects which made our placement feel very valuable.
When I began on my placement year, the workload was cut down in order for me to partake in training so I would be able to do my job effectively and efficiently. After my training, the workload steadily increased and allowed me to remain busy throughout the day and remain engaged.
I was given the same amount of responsibility as any other member of staff and was responsible for my actions. This allowed me to take risks on some projects that when they went well, I was commended, but also I was able to learn from my mistakes when things didn't go as planned.
The skills I have developed from partaking in this placement include being able to communicate effectively, how to deliver information to large groups of people with poise and how to prioritize work efficiently. The training was exemplary and when looking at how it would assist in my degree and beyond, it has taught me the vital skills in order to achieve the best results possible!
