The Role
I fully enjoyed the placement. I worked in test engineering and was given a range of tasks. Given responsibility equivalent to the graduates and even lead 2 design projects. Cummins was an excellent company to work for
Very valued. Not looked down upon for being a placement student and felt part of the team. Felt my contributions were welcomed and encouraged. Everyone very friendly
Good support from supervisor. Set a range of projects but was also very proactive in seeking out work and guidance myself.
Some days very busy (when vehicle testing or working on designs. However, did not have that many daily tasks so sometimes a slow work day. However, flexitime meant the days when you had lots to do were balanced by less busy days
A surprising amount of responsibility I wouldn't have expected before starting the year. Very pleased I did the year in industry as I gained so much valuable experience to take forward when applying for graduate jobs
Skills developed well. Soft skills e.g. communication were improved on every day from working in a team environment. Also had the opportunity to lead projects, chair meetings and mentor the next placement student. The placement taught me how to work effectively by myself and with others
The Company
Excellent! really friendly and relaxed. The ideal environment to work in
Pretty well organised. A whole 'student development programme was run with workshops with other placement students. I had a role and tasks given but sometimes had to work hard to get tasks
Felt I was very invested in. Can see that Cummins values its employees and their development

Great company to work for and would be pleased to go back. However, I would perhaps like to explore another engineering industry
The Culture
Really good. 19 placement students so lots of support and opportunity to organise socials together. Also had monthly meetings and organised charity events together which was fun.
Darlington rent was very cheap. Restaurants to go to and lots of shops in the village. Drinks slightly more expensive than I had expected
It was ok. A few main places to go. Some good bars. A good placement student group meant we had a few good nights out together
Yeah loads. Not just the placement group but also my team in the company had socials (driving range, bowling, meals out, drinks etc. ) and people organised get togethers for birthdays etc.
