The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at CRUK. The 12 weeks could not have gone any quicker and I feel I have grown so much both in practical skills and general transferable skills and confidence in my work. There are great opportunities to get involved in intern fundraising and other social aspects of CRUK life. Expenses cover your travel and lunch and although not being paid can make the role slightly conflicting. You want to put everything into your role as you have been chosen for the internship however just being a volunteer reminds you that you can leave whenever you want and you should be stressed about your role.
Extremely valued - from getting involved in team birthdays to regular positive feedback I knew my work was making a difference. Although it is frustrating that you are not being paid for your work, the recognised value you bring to the team and tangible results make the internship scheme worthwhile.
I was given lots of support from my team with weekly 1-1 sessions with my intern manager. You can also do to your intern co-ordinator who can help you with any queries your manager can't answer or can set up networking with people outside of your team.
My role varied greatly with how busy I was. Some days I was completely rushed off my feet while other days, even towards the end of my placement, I felt I have nothing to do and often spent time browsing for other jobs to apply to. You have to be confident in asking for more work although even then there still wasn't always lots to do.
Responsibility grew throughout my time on my internship however I was never fully responsible for anything I did. My intern manager approved all my work before I sent it on to the appropriate teams. Although this was frustrating, the other permanent marketing execs had to do the same as we still finding our feet.
The personal development scheme as part of the internship is brilliant! You receive a full personal development pack and encouraged to sign up the beneficial buddy and mentor scheme. Having identified my personal development goals in the intro day, I could then share these with my manager and decide how I could work on these over the 12 weeks.
