About You
With Unilever being home to some of the most high profile brands in the world, I was keen to experience the marketing department and this insight did not disappoint. This was an extremely insightful experience and I really enjoyed my time spent here. There were plenty of networking opportunities and I gained a real insight into how marketing operates here.
I found everyone I met during this insight to be really welcoming and we had a number of talks given to us by some quite senior members of staff, which enabled us to feel valued. From a financial point of view, I felt very well invested in, as we were provided accommodation and food over the course of the insight, as well as reimbursed all of our travel costs.
I felt well guided throughout this insight. As it is only a short insight programme, you are not expected to know anything and we were explained all the basics about the business and our chosen function, which I found to be really useful. On the first day, we were given a guidance booklet, which explain the programme activities and provided extra information should we need it.
I am really grateful for the skills that I learnt on this placement and even just having this experience on my CV has already opened up a number of doors for me. Whilst I deepened my knowledge of how marketing operates in a global firm, I also gained many transferable skills, such as networking and communication, as well as greatly improving my confidence.
The Company
I really could not fault the structure and organisation of this programme- everything was seamless! The activities were extremely well planned and I found there to be a good balance between skill development sessions and networking opportunities, marking this a really well rounded insight. The structure of the programme really ensured that we got the most out of Unilever!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Unilever and I found this to be one of the defining features of the company! There is a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the office, and whilst being professional, I did not find it to be overly corporate. Similarly, the other interns were very friendly and we all got on well.
There was no formal training provided on this programme due to the short nature, however, all of the activities we took part in where aimed at our personal development. We had numerous networking events with senior members of staff, which developed our communications skills, as well as plenty of team building sessions.
This programme is really beneficial in terms of providing an insight into what having a full time role here would be like. There is the opportunity to spend time in your chosen department (mine being marketing), as well as the opportunity to have questions sessions with members of staff ranging from graduates to senior VPs.
I got a really good insight into the culture at Unilever during my short time here. The office is open plan, with lots of fun ‘pop out’ areas, and I would say this reflects the company culture: fun and open. Diversity is highly promoted at Unilever and we had many presentations on this. It is good to know about the many opportunities available for women.
The content during this programme is really useful in terms of helping to determine a future career path. There is content aimed specifically at your chosen function as well as a more general overview of Unilever and the FMCG industry, which helps to determine whether your skills match the industry. There is also one-one sessions with managers in your chosen function who help you decide whether this is a good career fit for you.
Everything Else
All accommodation paid for and travel expenses reimbursed.
There are so many opportunities to network on this programme, with a wide variety of different employees. We were lucky enough to have a networking session with a senior Vice-President who gave use lots of very useful career advice, as well as networking sessions with industrial placement students and graduates, who provided tips on the application stage. On the final evening, we had a formal networking dinner, which was really enjoyable.
