The Role
It was a great experience working as a part of big team with people from different background and skill sets. It definitely helped me develop my soft and technical skills. Even though being the least experienced member in the team, I was encouraged and appreciated to bring innovative ideas to table and in the end, I felt like I was making a difference. It has been a great experience which will definitely help me throughout my career.
My team always encouraged me to input my ideas and opinions in to the subject matter. They showed great appreciation for my work and it was very encouraging and motivating to receive praise on various occasions on the company's internal media and social networks. Eventually I was appointed on major projects once they realized the value I could bring to the table, which was a great experience and opportunity.
The program is setup to provide huge amount of support and guidance. It starts with a induction with all other placement students and senior members of company and a lot of guidance and safety training is provide before we even take on any work. We are then appointed a mentor and a line manager that help us through our daily activities. We are also provided with a competency development manager, Contact from HR and a professional development mentor who ensure we are trained according to UK spec and design training courses according to our needs. There are regular reviews with senior engineers who monitor our progress and ensure there are no issues.
Day to day basis varied on the work load. As I was part of maintenance team, some days were extremely busy such a maintenance shutdowns while some days were really quiet when the plant is running smoothly. This sometimes worked out well for me because I could use the extra time to develop other skills for my charter ship and could possible take part in different activities happening around the company.
In the beginning, the amount of responsibility was not much. I was doing basic tasks and was frequently send on a various training. This is understandable due to the nature of work, which have a lot of safety implications. However, once I was competent in certain areas, I was assigned on different valuable projects. There were times where I felt like I could something more valuable if the opportunity was there.
This is one of the great aspects of the placement. The training I received was really valuable. It not only helped me during my workplace but also helped me a lot in my final project at the university. The training included a mix of in-house training and external training. It was catered to the skill set development of the student based on there performance reviews.
The Company
A very lively atmosphere! The offices are open plan where I could interact with other colleagues and team members. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Specially in the beginning, they did understand that I am new to the company and helped me in every way they could. They were very encouraging, motivating and will also praised me for doing a great job on few occasions.
It was setup well! There are things that could be improved such as providing with a extended introduction to extended team in the beginning which would be beneficial in settling down in the office. Quality of hardware resources could also be improved. I forward the suggestions to the development team and they really appreciated the feedback and ensured that it will be implemented for the next batch.
A lot! This was on the biggest perks of working in the company. They do not hold back in training there employees. immense amount of money goes in to training the employees so that they can become competent and confident in the job thy are doing. I was sent of a lot of courses which are set up to UK spec standard that helped me work toward my goal of charter engineer.

I am definitely looking to come back as a graduate. The company seems to be investing in the long term future for the company and the employees. I believe it will and exciting prospect and would be really beneficial for my career. Working for a corporate environment ensures that me training is done right and is focused on areas that I need the most help with.
The Culture
I was sent on a lot of training with other placement student and colleagues but there was nothing much socially organized in terms of networking and building contacts. This is something that can be improved instead of leaving it to ourselves which could be tough specially when joining a new company.
I would way the cost of living was average. It depends what is ones preference. The company's location is quite central to various major cities so there is a flexibility of picking a location that suits me. Which also directly affects the socialising activities happening in the area. The place I lived had decent amount of socializing activities,
