The Role
I have enjoyed it very much - it has been an extremely valuable part of my university course. It has given me an insight into what my future career will be like. I've learnt more on placement than in university lectures, as it is very much learning on the job.
Mostly valued - as we have been on placement a long time we have become a part of the team in the hospital. Sometimes we feel undervalued but only by a few staff members, we usually feel appreciated for the work we do.
I have been lucky in my hospital to have support from our manager and education adviser (who comes in to visit us regularly). I know of other people on my course in different placement sites that have not been so lucky.
Mostly busy. Occasionally timetabling puts you in a quiet room, and as a student you don't have much to do. This can be challenging as you feel like you are in the way.
Responsibility has built up throughout my placement, and I've been given more responsibility as I've been signed off for competencies, to the stage where I am acting as a member of staff.
Very much, as I have been practically doing the job but as a student. Our placement shows us exactly what the job will be like. It also helps with academic work to see your knowledge in practice.
The Company
Not in an office, a hospital but it is mostly a good atmosphere, if not a little stressed at times, as is to be expected in a busy radiotherapy department.
Mostly well organised but we found out our placement sites with not much notice, which made accommodation booking difficult.
The staff want to train you up to be able to work in that department, and want you to enjoy working there so you will stay for your career.
Above 25 days holiday
Waiting for jobs to be released but we have been assured that there will be a few jobs and we will be likely to get them.
The Culture
Students do not usually socialise with staff, which I find disappointing when we are part of the department for so long.
Quite an expensive place to rent but cheap compared to down south. Socialising is average price.
Not much time for nightlife! But there are many bars and clubs in the city.
Nothing, as students are not welcome to join staff activities.
