The Role
I enjoyed the work and was given plenty of support with projects I have worked on. The work was interesting and challenging with plenty of opportunities to stretch yourself.
As the year progressed the work became more challenging and the work became more valuable. By 6 months the work done was the same value as that of others.
Had regular meetings with the team and my manager to check up on how I was getting on and this could be controlled by me as to how often it occurred. The MPDS scheme for the IMechE was also good.
Most of the time I was busy with multiple projects or completing training for the work I was doing. Occasionally there are times where there wasn't quite enough work but rarely.
All projects I worked on I was responsible for and the work I would do would be trusted to be correct. Work is reviewed by an expert and feedback given as is the same for others.
All the knowledge needed and gained during my placement was from the work done in university Subjects. It also helped to put things we had learned in university into a context. Soft skills such as communication and presentation skills we're also of great value!
The Company
The office was very friendly with team meetings every week to make sure everything was okay and keep you up to date with current events. The office atmosphere was relaxed which helped productivity and communication between the team. Everyone is friendly and approachable which really helps you feel part of the team and settle in at the start of the placement.
I applied in the summer and had my placement by the end of January after telephone interviews and an assessment centre. The assessment centre went well however was difficult to get to. Job descriptions could be more accurate to give prospective students a better idea of what they'll be doing during the year.
There was a lot of training for both skills required to perform the job to the best of your ability and other soft skills. There is a lot of training for both and you can decide to an extent what training you go to. I'd recommend the engine appreciation where you follow the production line to see the process of making an engine.

There are lots of opportunities to take part in the student scheme where you can go back in the summer and get more experience. A lot of ex students are currently employed with the company. You don't have to get a job in the same role you did as a student either.
The Culture
The students organised events between themselves. There is also a sports and social club which host events throughout the year. There are multiple other clubs including football and karting. The team I worked with also did monthly trips for lunch or other team building activities. At the start of the placement we did the Yorkshire three peaks!
Finding somewhere to rent is quite difficult but if you can do that then living in the area is not expensive it is about the same as going to university. Daventry town centre has three supermarkets, Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose so there is plenty of choice to choose from. There are also other small shops on the high street.
Daventry itself doesn't have much in the way of nightlife however if it's this you're looking for then living in Coventry or Leamington is a good option as there are more places here to go out. Lots of the students tend to live here and drive in so even if you live in Daventry you can get to these places with other students.
Lots of the team I was in was quite young so they would organise events for the team to go to places and do things outside work. The students also had a Facebook group which will be sorted when you get there and the students also organise events between themselves.
