About You
I enjoyed the First Year Insight Programme very much indeed. The three-day programme was packed with informative yet fun talks, workshops, presentations and networking events. I gained valuable insight into the firm's culture, office environment, as well as the general work of an international commercial lawyer working at DLA Piper.
I definitely felt valued during my time at DLA Piper. The HR staff were very friendly, knew every single participant personally and chatted with individuals regularly to ensure everyone is enjoying their time. Not only trainees, but also senior associates and partners were actively involved in / hosted many of the workshops and presentations.
I was able to develop a wide array of skills through the First Year Scheme, which will be useful to both my degree studies and future job applications. The skills i learn ranged from public-speaking and presentation skills, commercial and financial awareness, application skills as well as social networking skills.
The Company
The First Year Insight Scheme was very well-balanced. Each participant was given a time table at the start of the programme, which was strictly adhered to. There was also a good balance of activities, covering various practice areas and sector focuses of the firm, as well as application tips and social networking opportunities.
The Insight Program helped me to understand what it would be like to have a full time role within the company, as I talked to members of all ranks and all practice areas. I fully experienced the culture of the firm, as well as the various opportunities for career progression available at the firm.
The three-day program was extremely useful in helping me decide on my future career path. Not only did I learn more about entering DLA Piper specifically, I was also able to contemplate whether being a commercial lawyers is right for me. I heard from practicing lawyers, and received many opportunities to conduct hands-on work on corporate as well as pro bono case-studies.
Everything Else
Every participant was reimbursed for their travelling expenses incurred whilst attending the First Year Insight Scheme. Participants who did not have accommodation arrangements during their time in London was also offered accommodation at a hotel near the office. The hotel was of decent quality and allowed participants who stayed together to get to know each other more.
There were plenty of networking and social event opportunities. Within the scheme's participants, we could network and bond through ice-breaking activities, as well as breakfast and during breaks everyday. In terms of networking with the firm's representatives, there were both lunches and dinners arranged with trainees to listen to their experiences in the firm.
I would definitely recommend this insight program to a friend. The application process of this scheme was smooth and simple, so it is definitely worth applying to this scheme. The scheme is also longer than most other Insight Schemes at other law firms, which allows participants to learn so much more.
