The Role
From day one the work was interesting and stimulating. Every day produced a new challenge and the satisfaction from knowing that the work you are involved in is having a real impact. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Deloitte summer vacation scheme.
Colleagues were consistently providing work for me to do specifically for them. They made clear the goals and where my input would factor into the outcome of specific projects they were undertaking.
I was assigned a 'buddy' who could be contacted before the placement if I had any questions, and who worked in close proximity, being available almost all of the time for guidance. All colleagues were extremely helpful and patient while I was still grasping even the most simple tasks.
During the course of my 7 week placement, there were just a handful of hours in which I had no assigned tasks. However, there was always work to go around, and proactivity provided extra oppertunities during these times.
I was given meaningful responsibility from an early stage, and the work I undertook had a real impact on service to clients.
The internship allowed me to experience the daily activities of a pensions actuary, and after my placement, I am positive that this is the career path I wish to pursue. The training received has been a good introduction to pensions. Also, transferrable skills such as confidence, logical thinking and analytical skills were developed throughout my placement.
The Company
Colleagues were friendly and had good relationships with each other, and I was able to integrate into the office very quickly. Everyone is very hard working balances this well with socialising.
The application process was relatively quick, with good feedback where appropriate. The interviews were conducted in an atmosphere which allowed and encouraged you to relax in an otherwise tense atomsphere! The initial generic training was very enjoyable, allowing you to get to know other people on the scheme who are not in your department or office, and therefore great for networking. The 'buddy' and 'champion' system reduced the settling in period, as you had well defined contacts for any queries that came up. A mid-way meeting was set up to check your progress and ensure you are getting the most out of the placement. The final interview was conducted in a manner similar to the first interview. The entire process was handled very professionally by the graduate recruitment team.
For initial training, which involved confidence building and presentation skills, all interns attended a three day residential course, staying in a hotel in Birmingham. During the internship, most colleagues were involved in different areas of my training, giving me a good all around knowledge base, and allowing me to get to know everyone in my office.
The day after my final interview with the partner in my office, I was offered a graduate position in the same office for the following year.
The Culture
We often met for lunch, and the Firm provided social evenings including bowling and dinner.
Being in Birmingham, everything was reasonably priced, with many student nights available.
Birmingham has a large selection of clubs and bars.
5-a-side football and other sports were available, and my office occasionally had drinks or went out for lunch.
