About You
I feel like the workshops and events that took place were interesting and gave me great information on how technology is broad. Everything was organised perfectly by the coordinators and had ensured everything was covered. I made a lot of great friends from a lot of different backgrounds which gave me insight into how technology can bring different specialities into one place.
I would say that I felt quite valued as everyone was approachable and I was asked a lot of questions about my field. However at certain events I feel like it was more aimed at students with background in coding or computer sciences rather than students who may be involved in technology.
There was a lot of support during the insight. A lot of the presenters during the event and workers at Barclays were very open to questions and allowed me to see how Actuaries can use technology or atleast be involved in it somehow. The shadowing workshop indeed was useful as it gave us a visual representation of a day to day job in the technology industry.
I feel like the general process along with the presentation and interview will help me to increase my confidence and communication skills. However because I am studying Actuarial Sciences much of the time I felt like some of the events were not useful to me and I couldn't get any insight specifically into my field.
The Company
There was great structure to the programme and everything was timed perfectly. There were a good mix of events however I felt like much of the time it could feel like a lecture and maybe introducing practical events will be more enticing and could interest the students more.
The atmosphere was really good, the coordinators were really happy and joyous and helped with any occasion. There was good banter across the events and within our groups and there was a lot of fun during the social networking and trip to Edinburgh. Everyone was approachable and the presenters were really enticing.
In particular the shadowing work experience helped to show what a day to day job would be like at Barclays. It was good to have 2 different job roles to see how technology jobs vary and also how they can interlock with each other. The workers were very informative and open to questions we had.
Company culture was a key feature behind Barclays and so it was highlighted throughout the week.
Learning about the technology week made me see that it's more related to backgrounds with code rather than someone pursuing a degree like mine (Actuarial sciences). At one point I was told there was no future for me! But seeing the work life in the technology department consolidated my passion to pursue a degree in Actuary.
Everything Else
There was plenty of opportunities as the social networking event involved workers at Barclays with all different backgrounds and experiences. After each event the presenters were open to questions and any queries we had that regarded our course. They also gave their card for contact in the future if we had any questions.
Generally it was more of an insight into Barclays and life work at Barclays rather than what they would do outside of work. People tend to have different hobbies and interests so to be honest I dont think it would be relevant to discuss in an insight programme like this
Yeah I probably would if they were interested in computer sciences or technology however not if they were in my course purely because it's more appealing to people with code background than mathematical or statistical background. I would also recommend if they were unsure of what company to work for in the future.
