About You
Very much so. There was a lot of work shadowing, and a lot of insights into how Barclays Technology worked at a high level. The Eagle Labs visit was a definite highlight, and the ability to interview for the summer scheme also made the whole experience better. The IDG training too was excellent
Very. The time taken out of the work day by the Barclays employees we shadowed is very much appreciated and does go to show how seriously they took our attendance, that coupled with the whole setup of the week (accommodation, food etc) made me feel very valued at this particular placement
A lot. We were given many talks by Barclays employees and analysts prior to the work shadowing sessions which allowed for a deeper understanding of what it was we were looking at, and if we did not understand, then any questions were happily answered. The two leaders of the programme were incredibly helpful
The introduction to working in Agile is something I will definitely carry into my future studies and career, as is a great and efficient way to work from what I have observed. Further, the information we received in the IDG training session will also help me develop my personal professional brand.
The Company
The timings were excellent, and everything ran very smoothly. The sessions outside of the main centre were all prepared prior to our arrival, and there was no sense of confusion around any of the activities. It seemed like a lot of effort had been put into planning and preparing this
Meeting people from many different backgrounds, universities, and subjects meant that you were always meeting someone new and the atmosphere created in the hall was great. We were encouraged to talk to the staff and the other attendees at a networking evening, which was also fantastic, as it allowed us to speak to many Barclays staff
A lot, as the IDG session was clearly of benefit to all attendees regardless of background or future career. The work shadowing sessions and Edinburgh trip also followed this pattern, thus making it very clear that they were investing very heavily in our development over this week long insight period
The work shadowing sessions did allow a lot of insight into this, thought I wish they did make the week more general in terms of introducing us to other departments within the company. The q and a sessions also helped in this regard, as we were further exposed to employees
From day 1 we were introduced to the company objectives and values, and in the shadowing sessions, as well as the q and a sessions, we were able to further ask employees about how they felt these values and objectives came into everyday work and task for them, thus showing us the company culture
Though not in the exact area I and looking at working in, this experience was instrumental in showing me the bigger picture in how banks operate at a high level and how important and central technology is to them. This week has helped me realise also how much can be learned from a summer placement
Everything Else
We were paid £250 for the week, though this figure excluded the costs of the hotel and food that Barclays paid for. So we were most certainly adequately reimbursed for the week, and the experience of the hotel was one that helped tie the whole week together and make it an excellent experience
