The Role
I learnt a great deal and was involved directly with the work my team was doing.
I had positive feedback from my colleagues and got on really well with them.
Team members I was working with offered very instructive support and within a matter of days I was up to speed with the basics. One colleague sat down and took me through the basics of accountancy qualification standards which was very helpful and interesting.
Wherever possible, when a project was on hold I tried to ask if anyone needed any help with anything. At times there was a lull - this gave me time to get on with some background research on the projects we were working on.
I came with my time to important meetings with clients and where appropriate I was given the opportunity to weigh in with my opinions. I felt like a proactive part of the team.
The general skills I learnt - people skills, commercial awareness and time management - are invaluable and are something that I can build on even more in the graduate role. They have helped me take my final year at university to the next level.
The Company
There was no sense of boredom in the office - there was a lot of energy and, although that energy had to be focussed on working at the project at hand, colleagues were always lighthearted.
The placement was meticulously organised and there was never a point at which I didn't know what was happening next in terms of the overall structure of the placement, which helped a lot with personal organisation.
E&Y was keen to build me up into a proactive team member during the placement.
National Travel
I have been made a graduate offer.
The Culture
The social scene was great, and the interns regularly met up of our own accord, as well as seeing each other at E&Y-organised events throughout the placement.
Reading is relatively inexpensive, but I did not live there for the duration of the placement, I commuted from London.
The nightlife was good with several bars and clubs as 'regulars' for the employees.
As interns we were regularly emailed about activities going on outside of work, and kept in the loop just as much as full-time employees there.
