About You
The insight week has been thoroughly enjoyable. I have met so many interesting people, from fellow students all the way up to senior levels. There have been a wide range of engaging activites, from M&A case studies to Global Markets work shadowing.
The bank places a high value on junior staff and students. The "reps" who have spent time with groups of students have been very supportive and have given very useful advice. It is clear that the culture at BAML views junior members of staff/interns etc.. as valuable, rather than just "numbers".
I have received a large ammount of both guidance and support. The employees at discussion panels often explain their route into their job, which can be extremely varied. Key terms and specific content have been explained very well and clearly also.
The skills I have developed and the information I have learned will assist me in both my studies and also my career future. I have learned more over the last few days than during weeks of reading books and watching online videos.
The Company
This insight week in my opinion is perfectly structured. The 1st day was a very general overview and introduction but as the days have gone on, the depth of content and relevancy to what you want to do, has increased. The activities are very varied.
I found the atmosphere inviting and supportive. I have had a lot of fun so far and the culture of the bank is definetely not like the stereotypes of an american Investment Bank. Collaboration and internal mobility are common themes I have heard.
The company invest in you by allowing shadowing opportunities which are highly educational. I learnt a lot about GM in a short amount of time. There is also a recommended reading list in the book that is handed out which is a great resource.
For GM, this insight opportunity certainly helped me to picture what working for BAML would be like as there was a shadowing opportunities. Understandably, due to the confidential nature of Investment Banking, the same kind of opportunity wasn't available but after speaking to employees from this division (IBK), I have a much clearer idea of the day-to-day work.
It is hard to fully gain an insight of company culture over a short time period, but from my time at this BAML spring week, I have quite a good understanding of their culture. I have received an outlook on the culture from employees in different divisions as well as different levels within the firm.
I now have a much better idea of what career path I am interested in pursuing. Over this week, many questions that I had have now successfully been answered thanks to either speaking to employees or other students. Lots of information about different divisions within the bank are clearly explained.
Everything Else
BAML offer to reimburse expenses such as travel costs. Accommodation is also offered if needed.
Yes. There have been several networking opportunities. The employees that we have been able to speak to at these events have been from different levels, which offers more variety and a different perspective when questions are answered.
I have had many networking opportunities. Each one has been different and rewarding also. Sometimes there are 10 people to 1 employee but sometimes it can be 1 to 1, so this is a good variety. I am grateful to the BAML employees for giving up their time to speak to the spring interns.
I have heard about tailored language courses that are available to employees. These are taught by other employees I believe. There are also charitable projects that employees can get involved with, such as helping out in the local community.
This is a certainly an opportunity I would recommend to a friend who is interestd in banking. It is rewarding to meet with likeminded people and to speak with senior members of staff.
