The Role
I greatly enjoyed the whole experience. I really appreciated the professional yet friendly atmosphere. My team spent a lot of time and effort making sure I had work to do and understood what was going on and I had a wide range of opportunities.
I was made to feel that I had value within my team, and that my input was useful.
I was given all the support and guidance I needed, although it was clearly on me to make sure I was getting on. My questions were always answered and I was repeatedly told that no question was silly.
I was seldom not busy, until the last few days when it was understandable as I couldn't get involved in any but the smallest tasks as I was soon to leave.
I felt that I had about the right level of responsibility. My work was always checked, but I was able to meet and interact with many clients. At times this interaction was one-on-one, or even one-on-several (with me being the one) without close supervision.
I learnt alot about 'real life' work, which studying at university doesn't teach. I have used the skills I developed in managing myself in my research project this year and I was given lots of feedback and several personal meetings so I know where I need to focus future development.
The Company
People were almost always very welcoming and friendly. At times it was a little quiet.
Everything seemed meticulously organised on the overall level, across the company. Within my team, it seemed very well organised although not perfectly. However I wouldn't expect it to be perfectly organised as I don't think the world works that way - things come up.
There were a few areas for training, although most of it seemed on the job. There was a very strong focus on development and I left with a clear idea of what I need to do to improve my performance. Also, I know that this development applies to everyone, not just interns.
I received an offer a few days after leaving the company.
The Culture
The social scene amongst colleagues wasn't thriving. However we had several social events between the various interns in the office, and there were many events organised for us in the initial week and on the final night.
Seemed about average to me.
Birmingham was a fantastic city to go out in.
There's a alot of opportunity to get involved in charity work. And Birmingham is a city of many opportunities anyway, being so large.
