About You
I enjoyed the insight much more than expected beforehand, because it was very practical. Not only was it engaging and helpful with information about the work environment, but it also contributed significantly from a personal perspective by employees sharing their life experiences with all the spring interns. Thus, I would recommend it to anyone interested in a career in Technology.
I felt very valued, which made me realise that 'Stewardship' is not only a value they look up to internally, but also take it into consideration in regard to the external interactions with potential candidates. They emphasised on how important young talent is to such a leading company on the market, thus making us feel that we could make a difference.
A lot: we received helped with networking, with teamwork skills, with being able to identify our personality strengths and weaknesses, with advice for good CVs, with information about all the divisions that we took interest in at Barclays. All in all, everyone was very helpful and friendly throughout the program.
Although I am just about to finish the program, I can already tell that what I learned this week will help me throughout my course. Now, I understand better what the business presumes, or how much work lays behind the IT departments in a bank. Moreover, I feel that I have developed my personal skills that will represent the core of my future career.
The Company
The insight was very well structured, with a clear organised schedule. We also had an app that we could download from the App Store, 'Barclays Events', which helped a lot with getting to know all the other attendants and being up to date with any change in the schedule of the week.
The atmosphere was vibrant and helped a lot. There were 5 full days of work, which could easily lead to a state of exhaustion, but the atmosphere was always the one keeping us motivated and energetic. The reason behind this is that the chosen speakers and the organisers created this inspiring and exciting environment for us.
They invested a lot of time and effort into preparing this insight, they took care of organising everything to the tiniest detail, they invited the best speakers from the company and they made sure our journey through the program will be as helpful as possible for our future career, whichever it may be.
Quite a lot, since we all had the opportunity to workshadow employees in various departments, emerging technology or development technology. The employees we shadowed have been working at Barclays for various years, therefore we were offered a broad perspective over the career steps in such a leading bank in the UK.
The insight was the perfect chance to experience the company culture. On one hand, we saw it indirectly through the interaction with the graduates, the employees and the organisers of the program. On the other hand, we saw it directly through our shadowing sessions that took place in the Barclays headquarters.
It was helpful because of the mixture of sessions. We had panels with technology demonstrations, sessions with group projects, workshops to help with our CV, interview sessions, trips to start-ups accelerators, networking events, shadowing hours, q&a sessions etc. Therefore, at the end of the day, we could each create the big picture of our future career path.
Everything Else
I was paid for the week a sum to help me with travel around the city and the food. Moreover, I was reimbursed the train tickets expenses. Of course, at first I had to pay everything from my own pockets, the reimbursements being made after the end of the program.
Yes, there were a lot. The work-shadowing sessions were a one-to-one with a graduate employee at Barclays, which was a great opportunity to ask a lot of questions and get to know the insights of each department. Of course, there were also sessions with directors and managers, who were as friendly and approachable as the graduates.
Firstly, the implementation of the Barclays Events App helped us to connect between Spring interns. We could text each other on the common platform and thus get to create connections. Second of all, the speakers were friendly and each invited us to connect with them on linkedin after each session. Lastly, we had a social networking event for two hours one evening at the Barclays headquarters will more than 100 people.
Yes, as well as extra activities within the company that can be approached.
Definitely.
