About You
It was a pleasure being a part of the programme. I got the opportunity to do work shadowing as well as listen to both presentations from the technology field and finance. It is a good opportunity to see if the summer internship is really for you. What I value the most is how real the experience was. Googling information is good, but getting the experience first hand is very different - which is good even if you decide not to go ahead and interview for the summer internship.
The company definitely spent a great deal of effort to bring us in. Everything was funded and well organized for us from accommodation to transport and food, which, in comparison to other companies I have worked with, is not something a student should expect - it is really just going a step further.
Diversity was encouraged throughout the programme and coming from a non-computing background, I received a lot of support from the employees I work shadowed. They explained everything I asked about - sometimes I had really basic questions but they were still happy to answer. The only bad thing is the communication prior to the programme could have been improved. Most of the people received the itinerary late, some even not at all.
As a student from a non-technology background I believe it is really important to get a feel for what the job (and industry) is really about. My expectations were quite different from what I have seen - the field is developing in a very different path than just pure finance.
The Company
The insight was good, there was a balance between presentations and more interactive activities. For the duration of the spring week we were also split in different group based on our skills/technical background. This was very beneficial as we also got to work with people who let's say did not know anything about our area of expertise, but the same the other way around.
As previously mentioned, there was a very diverse community coming from different subjects, but the emphasis was really on the skills and personality attributes rather than the degrees. It was quite interesting to see people from different fields interested in technology and gave me some inspiration to do further research in other topics.
They invited over a hundred of employees to come to speak to us, organized accommodation, transport & food for us. I would say this proves they do care about their spring interns and invest a lot of effort and money into grooming us.
To be honest, some of the roles we have seen I did not find interesting at all. At least this made me realize what I don't want to do even if I still don't know where exactly I fit in yet.
A lot, meeting the employees in the environment they are working in is the best way to convey the culture.
Very much - as previously stated, even though I still don't know what exactly in the industry I want to do, at least I know what I do not want to do.
Everything Else
More than enough. The company payed for everything and gave me a personal allowance (which I did not end up using at all).
Yes, I talked about this a little more above.
Yes, we had dinners & lunches even with the senior managers.
Good - the company has quite a few projects to get involved in to increase their CSR.
Definitely yes. It is difficult to get through the programme as it is quite tiring, however, this was a really good opportunity to get an insight into the company.
