About You
The 2 weeks at Nomura was very insightful, in terms of learning about the various divisions within Global Markets and learning about how they are all linked together and work cohesively. Meeting new people (other interns and staff) was the most enjoyable thing on the programme, as you are meeting people form different backgrounds, who have different jobs and interests.
In terms of feeling valued, it is very hard to say because the staff here are very busy, therefore they can only try their best to talk to you or meet with you. However, when this does happen, you do feel very valued and special because they have taken time out of their busy schedules to advice, explain and help us with any enquiries.
So much guidance and support is given on the programme. If you are unsure about particular topics or products, you are mostly to get the help and answer. Despite this, the programme does train you to also be independent, so you will be left to network and build connections and relationships with staff members by yourself by booking coffee chats and meetings.
I believe that majority of the info given to me these past week will definitely help me. Whether it be in my degree studies or just in general. Majority of the advice given can be related to personal life and career life. Most important, skills and information developed here will help me to help other who are yet to step into banking.
The Company
In terms of structure, it was very loose. Majority of your day is revolved around you sitting at your desk, attending sessions and networking. How well the insight goes is very dependent on the individual and if they make the most of their time. You are given that responsibility to plan your own day.
The general atmosphere was productive and insightful. You are learning different things everyday about yourself and the world of banking, because the programme is very intense, you are envisioning yourself in the various job roles and seeing if it matches your qualities and skills and mainly discovering if banking is suitable for you.
The firm does provide you with information about their particular product, however it is your responsibility to ask questions and further enquire about things you may not understand thoroughly. Also as it is only 2 weeks, the staff aren't able to provide you with a full training and development session.
They did this very well. By us being on the desk alongside the staff we are able to clearly see how their typical day is structured, including all the jobs and tasks they have to do. It does give you a detailed insight on how banking is and provides you with the exposure to what actually goes on.
The culture of the company is reflected in majority of what they do. Nomura is a Japanese firm, so many things are revolved around their Japanese link. The culture is very relaxed as well and you are able to see this clearly , as you are given the opportunity to work alongside them for 2 weeks.
Very valuable; because you are meeting new people and being introduced to new sectors, you are able to immediately judge which sector is most suited to you and your qualities and what you want your career to be in. The programme gives you this exposure to answer questions such as "what sector suits me?"
Everything Else
The programme was a paid internship, which is also good as you are learning and still being paid. It is a nice incentive and difference that other internships don't always offer. it is nice to know that you are getting paid for learning and networking with others, it also gives you a feel of how it is to work and be paid
Yes: I'd say majority of the programme is built and focused around networking and building connections with people who you see an interest in or simply just want to know more about what they are doing at Nomura. Of course, not every job description will suit you, however being provided with opportunity to freely speak to staff and arrange meetings with them is very efficient and helpful.
There are many networking opportunities which are left up to you to take advantage of. This independence builds you as a person, your confidence increases as well as your communication and interaction skills, which is very valuable. Also, by them giving you this opportunity it gives you a taste of what is to come in the future as majority of the banking world revolves around 'who you know' which is networking.
Nomura has a gym which staff can go to at any time of the day. I am also aware that they have sport teams as well where employees can be involved in. On the 6th floor, there's also a terrace where employees have drinks and socialise with one another after a long day.
I would recommend this insight to someone who is looking to going to banking, but isn't sure what division they want to specialise in. This programme allows you to be exposure to various divisions and sectors, where you are then able to decide what job suits you as a person and where you will enjoy the most.
