About You
The support at Nomura is absolutely amazing. Each intern is assigned one or two 'buddies', who are juniors that work in your chosen division. Furthermore, the desk managers and HR representatives are always happy to help and connect you to any resources you need. There was also a great support network within the intern cohort.
The most valuable development for me was to be able to apply the knowledge attained from my degree into practice. Through my assigned tasks, I was also able to develop my proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. There are also a lot of public speaking opportunities, whether that be presenting to your team or speaking up during workshops.
The Company
The insight week was very structured. Global Markets schedule: Day 1 - Training Day 2-5 Desk 1 Day 6-9 Desk 2 Throughout the internship, there are also various workshops for interns to attend. Attendance at workshops for your division are mandatory but we were encouraged to go to ones in other divisions as well.
The general atmosphere was great during my insight. Because there was quite a bit of flexibility to schedule our days independently, there was always opportunities to go speak to other people, which means that every day was different and the atmosphere was lively. Everybody on the trading floor was very nice and the culture is amazing, which I think is the defining factor for the positive atmosphere.
The training was really great. The training on day one was provided by a representative from iBank. There was an Excel workshop, introduction to finance, compliance training, and a trading game. Throughout the programme, we were encouraged to attend as many workshops as we wanted and to speak to people in the departments which we were most interested in.
Because the GM internship allows you to intern with two desks as well as explore around the business, I truly got a very good and holistic understanding of the bank as an overall entity. Furthermore, interns are able to be fast-tracked to different divisions, should that be their preference, which is quite a rare opportunity.
Everything Else
This is a two week internship. Interns are paid on a daily basis. On each Friday, we are required to submit a timesheet which we then get paid for in the following week. Our travel and accommodation were reimbursed to an extent. Candidates can reclaim the expenses by submitting a reimbursement form.
There were plenty of networking opportunities throughout the programme. On day one, we had a networking lunch with our assigned buddies, providing us exposure to juniors in the company. Half way through the programme, there was a lunch with senior business representatives. On the penultimate day (and every Thursday), there was a farewell networking drinks session where we were able to meet with people in the business, other WIP interns, and participants in the other insight programme.
This programme is great because although you are only placed in one division (i.e. GM, IBD, Corp.), you have the flexibility to meet people across the business, whether this be through informal coffee chats or through the intern workshops. HR and your team is always happy to connect you to people you would be interested in speaking to and the networking opportunities are amazing.
I would absolutely recommend this insight programme to a friend. This is one of the few, if not the only, spring INTERNSHIP in the city that allows you to be sitting at a desk and contributing to a team. Not only is this an amazing work experience, but also an opportunity to meet with like-minded and intelligent individuals that share your interests.
