About You
It was a really enjoyable experience. Work shadowing was valuable and interesting, allowing me insight into the company that I could not have gained otherwise. All but one of the workshops were really fun, and at the same time allowed me to develop soft skills and knowledge. The first night we went bowling and the second night we had a networking dinner, both were really good opportunities to network with employees and other people on the program.
Everyone I spoke to was really friendly and happy to answer my questions. I was really impressed with how much trust they put in us, especially when work shadowing, and this made me feel even more welcomed. Everyone I spoke to was happy to my answer my questions, and in both my work shadowings the team leaders took time out of their schedule to answer all my questions despite being busy.
There wasn't much guidance in the workshops and work shadowing, but I don't think that was a bad thing. The fact that we weren't given a lot of guidance allowed us to make mistakes and fail, allowing us to develop and learn more from the experience than if we were given a lot of guidance.
The insight programme put a heavier focus on personal development rather, with not much in the form of recruiting, which made the experience very valuable. I learnt more about agile development over the 3 day-program than I did in my software engineering course. The programme helped develop soft skills as well such as teamwork and public speaking (there are a lot of occasions where someone has to stand up and summarise what your team did), and this was particularly valuable and I will definitely take away the lessons I've learned.
The Company
Very well structured. We did speed about 20 minutes at the beginning of each day waiting for it to start, but once we started we did a lot. Despite each day being about 9 hours of work and 3 hours of networking, each day flew by and I was never bored. We covered a broad range of topics from cyber security to UX design, and I felt I learnt a lot.
It was a really casual atmosphere. As we were at the Glasgow office we could even wear jeans if we wanted. There was very little pressure, with it only coming from time limits on some of the workshops which did prove a little stressful at times. All the other programme atendees were like minded and friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
We took part in two work shadowings, and this allowed us to gain insight into two different sections of the business. Both were really interesting and allowed me to get a feel for the atmosphere inside of teams, which seemed really friendly and casual. The shadowings gave a glimpse into the problems technologists tackle into the firm, which was interesting to learn about and helped me better understand what a full-time role involved.
The program cemented my interest in working at JPMorgan, as the impression the program gave me of the company exceeded my expectations. It's clear to me why so many people start on the spring week and then move onto internships and graduate programmes, as they run such a good program that really makes you feel valued and leaves you wanting to learn more about working for them.
Everything Else
They cover the costs of travel and the hotel (which includes a buffet breakfast every day). The hotel was really nice and reminded me of a Premier Inn, which was more than adequate for the 3-day stay. Additionally, they offer a buffet lunch every day (really good food), and dinner on the first and second day of the programme. All alcohol is free at the networking events, and there appeared to be no limit on the bar tab at the bowling alley which was really generous of them. Overall the reimbursement is more than adequate.
There was a networking dinner on the second night and a networking lunch on the third day. They were quite valuable as you got to speak with more senior people, but I felt the work shadowing was more valuable for networking. I think the networking dinner could have been better if we were seated, but providing your willing to go over and start the conversation yourself this wasn't an issue.
There was lots of free food and drink, and a lot of people who had volunteered their time to answer questions and give more of a feel for the company, all of which were happy to talk to you. The social event was a great opportunity to network with other programme attendees and were lots of fun.
This could have been covered better. Before we attended the program we were asked to watch a video introducing us to the firm which mentioned volunteering. But over the program it wasn't mentioned after this, but I was able to learn more about it talking to an employee at a networking event.
Definitely. Even if you're not sure about whether you want to work at JPMorgan, it's a really good experience to develop soft skills and learn more about a career in technology. The experience is one of the most valuable I had had, and I felt like I developed a lot as an individual.
