About You
I really enjoyed the internship and it provided me with a great insight into the company and its technology. The Spring into Technology internship had a mixture of networking, coding challenges and introduction talks into different areas of the company. I learnt a lot about the technology stack, met some really smart people and had fun in the evening social activities too!
I felt very valued. During work shadowing opportunities, graduates and full time employees took time off the day to day work to talk with us and give demonstrations on their work. Next, during one of the coding challenges, there were many technologists there to run things and help us along. J. P. Morgan really put their time and effort into us to give us a good insight into the company and we got to meet some important people.
The spring week was run by a team from HR, they were amazing, planned things so well and kept us informed with what was going on. If there was any issues, we could approach them so easily. Next, there was also lots of support from other technologists with JPM, they were happy to talk about what they do and give us tips on what to do next.
The coding challenges were very fun. We were able to apply programming knowledge to solve problems and there was also a challenge related to Agile which was very interesting. These are skills which we require in day to day software development so was very useful. Additionally, there were talks on security and UX which was fascinating too.
The Company
The spring week was extremely well structured. The HR team was amazing and planned the 3 days very well. There was a good mixture of technical events, networking opportunities and social evenings. It was extremely fun and the insight gave a good and rounded view of the J. P. Morgan.
The atmosphere was friendly and all employees were happy to talk about what they do and give us demonstrations. We met some very smart people and the social events provided us with opportunities to talk with interns and graduates in a relaxed environment too. The well structured 3 days had group activities which allowed all the spring week interns to get to know one another well.
There was little technical training. It was mostly coding challenges which allowed us to apply some of the topics we learnt at university. Nevertheless, I felt that I was able to develop my soft skills throughout these activities. All the activities involved teamwork and some of them had presentation aspects too.
The work shadowing gave us a good impression of what it would be like to have a full time role in the company. We were shown around the offices and saw the working environments including meeting rooms and the desks were teams sat together. Talking with different technologists gave a good idea of the culture within the company and the different opportunities available.
Speaking with the employees in the company and being shown around the office gave a good insight into the company culture. Learning about different departments within the firm such as the innovation centre gave an insightful view of how JPM wants its technologists to continually learn new skills and be innovative too.
It was been extremely valuable, learning about the different areas in technology was very useful when thinking about future career paths I would like to take. Networking with people from different parts of J. P. Morgan provided a view of the day to day work carried out in different teams. It has been very valuable gaining that insight.
Everything Else
Since I lived in the area, accommodation was not provided for me. However, I do know that many others stayed in hotels which was all paid for and arranged my JPM. Nevertheless, travel expenses were reimbursed and for those staying in the hotel, a coach was provided everyday. Additionally, transport to social events around the city was also arranged by the company.
Yes, there were so many opportunities to meet and network with other technologists within the company. We were able to meet infrastructure people, software engineers and security professionals so it was interesting gaining an insight into different areas in the company and learning about the backgrounds of different employees. These networking events were planned, in the timetable and everyone was very organised.
The networking events were very insightful. There was opportunities to network throughout the coding challenges and social events but there were also networking sessions over lunch. We were able to meet employees from different areas, in management, frontend software developers to infrastructure engineers. The social events were also fun as well, there were social events on 2 evenings.
Yes, JPM makes it clear that there are many activities to get into outside of usual business work. They gave a varied insight into the different societies that is within the company and employees talk about these activities as well during networking opportunities. It was actually rather surprising how much there is to get up to outside of normal working hours.
Yes! Definitely! The insight really sells the company very well and gives us a very insightful view into the different areas of technology at J. P. Morgan. Additionally, it gives a good insight into whether the culture is for you and finally, it was just a lot of fun and you get to meet lots of fantastic people!
