About You
Very intense program. I learned a lot, both about the business, but also about myself. The people both at J. P. Morgan and the other spring week attendees where very friendly. I will definitely recommend the spring week insight to others, and I will also recommend J. P. Morgan in general due to this experience.
Everyone where very friendly and thoughtful, but especially [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], from the rates - sovereign derivatives desk, made me feel very valued and welcome in general. She definitely tipped the scale significantly in a positive direction. The rest of the employees and especially HR where also welcoming and gave me a positive impression on the culture and the organisation.
We got a lot of guidance and support throughout the week, and when we had any questions, they where answered right away. I quickly got the feeling though, that during the presentations, people where just asking questions to show their own knowledge and skill, and not really out of interest of the subject, which got out of hand a couple of times, and left me a little frustrated. The presentations where very good, and therefore me and a few others i talked to, where disappointed when the presentations got high jacked by "look at me"-questions from the audience. I don't know how to fix this problem without making people feel their questions are unwanted, but I suggest that HR maybe could step in and ask that further questions where saved for the end of the presentations. At least step in the few obvious times it got out of hand. Everyone is excited, and everyone wants to shine, so I know it is bound to happen and that it is hard to do much about it.
I have never in my life received a more intense crash course in any subject. Everyone learned so much about the different lines of business and the technical terms in markets. I am sure my new found knowledge is going to help me out during my economics studies, and my understanding of banking, bonds and derivatives where especially improved, which will help me in choosing a career path.
The Company
Everything went according to plan, and there was absolutely no waiting around, which is so rare at events like these. I very much respect the planning and execution of the whole process, and I cannot think of anything that would improve structure the week. Getting presented to all the departments before desk rotations and before we really dug into our own presentations to much, worked really well and ensured a steep but realistic learning curve.
In general very warm and comforting, but a few people on the spring week took the competition to seriously. It toned down during the last two days, but in the beginning people where willing to do some counter productive things in order to look better than others. I won't go into details. All employees told us so many times that we where not being assessed to ensure this wouldn't happen, so i guess it is just the name of the game, but it is really bad for teamwork, and there are now a couple of people that I will never work with in my life, because they tried to make me look bad compared to them. (It was only a few instances and not a general problem during the week)
Everything where beyond my expectations. From accommodations and transport expenses to the time spent learning us banking. It made us feel very wanted and made me believe when employees said that J. P. Morgan invests in its people.
I feel that i fully understand what I would be saying yes to, if ever given the opportunity to work in markets. I feel that I know most of the different roles, and this gives me a full understanding of what I want to apply for at J. P. Morgan.
There was a big exposure to employees and their interactions with each other, so I think I understand the culture now, but it is hard to fully grasp it in only one week, and that is the only reason for the 9 star review instead of the 10 star. A summer internship is a more realistic time frame for understanding the culture.
Almost priceless. I could not have gotten any better information about markets and about J. P. Morgan anywhere else. I also now know exactly what I am never going to work with, which is a valuable lesson in life as well. This spring week made me sure that I want to work in London.
Everything Else
All expenses where covered by the firm.
There where networking events everyday, and everyone was exposed to seniors as well as junior level employees. We also got to know each other really well, and there where to social events in the evenings during the week, which where a lot of fun both nights.
Good. Long enough to speak to everyone I wanted to, and there where always a lot of food and beverages.
Yes. We where on several occasions presented to the different opportunities outside of work.
