About You
I did enjoy the insight very much. I really liked the structure of the week in the treasury and trade solutions. All the small group talks and question and answer sessions were extremely interesting and informative. I was really happy with all the managers and staff who were all extremely friendly and welcoming to any questions on their topics which were often difficult or confusing at first, due to the complex nature of this business.
I felt relatively valued during the spring week. While the staff were all friendly and nice towards me, and often spoke about how they see our potential and what we could become, the fact we did no work for the business meant I did not feel truly valued. If anything, it felt like the spring week interns were a strain on the real workers of citi for this week.
We received a tremendous amount of support and guidance during the week. Pretty much the whole internship was just guidance and advice. Since again we were not able to complete any work throughout the week, we were just explained and guided through what actual work is like. All the teaching was second to none.
I definitely feel like I learnt and developed a wide range of skills during the spring week. Many of the full internship wide sessions such as assessment centre 101 and the innovation talk were extremely helpful, but I think I learnt the most during the more intimate TTS talks, where I managed to get a good grasp of what such a wide department is within the space of just five days.
The Company
The structure of the programme was probably the best aspect to it. I felt lucky because when I spoke to fellow interns in different departments to TTS it felt like their days were far less structured and included more shadowing. I think shadowing is good but after a short amount of time the shadowee will have explained everything to the intern and then the intern is just left awkwardly sitting behind him doing nothing expect putting the worker off his job.
The general atmosphere was really warm and friendly which was very surprising to me. Since these spring weeks are so competitive and difficult to get accepted on to, I was worried that all the other interns as well as the workers would be cut-throat, brutal corporate robots who couldn't hold a regular conversation. I acctually made some new friends there and was really happy for most of the week
The company certainly invested in the spring interns, and they seemed to certainly view us as the future of the business. HR would often tell us how talented we were to get there and how sky high our potential was as corporates. They definitely put a lot of money and time into planning these internships to ensure the graduate workers they do get are well trained.
Yeah it very much did map out what a job in this industry and in this division in particular would be like. They did this from both a social aspect, in terms of explaining the hours and the stresses, as well as the technichal aspect, in terms of explaining what strategys they use and how they interact with clients.
Not too much. To be honest I think most banks do not have a huge company culture. At citi they repeatedly stated their global network and presence in over 100 countries but this isnt really a company culture. It kind of furthurs my belief that all large banks are essentially the same thing just some are slightly kore successful and pay their workers more than others.
Quite valuable but as it was so short I am still not totally decided where I would like to go in the future. I did certainly enjoyed the week and from all the people I met in Citi's TTS department I weould not mind being in their position when I'm slightly older. It hasn't made me cross TTS and finance off the list of potential careers, but it hasn't made me decide for certain that thats where I would like to go.
Everything Else
I have not been paid or reimbursed yet but the HR department did ensure all the money spent on travel and food would be reimbursed within six weeks. The internship was not paid but it was just five days and we didn't do any work for the company or help them in any way so I would not expect any payments for this.
Yes there was definitely a lot of networking oppurtunities. HR department kept stressing to us interns the importance of networking. I had to disagree and think it was overstated as networking in general is an overrated concept and not as important as doing real work once you get a job. Awkward chats with other people wont get you anywhere.
I didn't enjoy them. Since they were all late night dinner events myself and the other interns were extremely tired after a long day at work. Since they were every evening of the week and we were pretty much forced to go it made the whole week incredibly long and I would often not come home until 9 or 10 because the networking event hadn't finished until ridiculously late. I hate networking
Not really.
I would recommend this insight to anyone who is able to get a place on it, for sure. The hours are slightly long and the networking events every evening make it difficult but since its only a week these long days are still manageable. If you plough through and get to the end of the week you would realise it is increibly valuable experience.
