About You
Mace's insight week was a really good experiance to get to know all areas of such a large international construction company. They organised a good variety of informative and engaging activities for us to do over the course of the week. I enjoyed visiting some of their high profile projects all across London.
As the experiance wasn't that long I could not contibute work myself to the company but they still made us feel like we were potential great assets to the company. As a company they clearly really valued the graduates they go on to employ and therefore want you to leave with a positive view of the company.
They were really supportive and offered us help with interview skills and on applying for placements that will be helpful beyond just working for them and the insight week. They also supported us by making sure we knew what was going on throughout the week. The feedback they gave will be very useful in the future.
During the week they held a session on interview skills, as well as help with how to write a good application, which will be very useful when applying for further experiences in the future. For people who are doing more technical degrees around construction, real like examples of different building techniques
The Company
The structure of the insight week was set out well with a great range of activities taking place each day. The activities covered a broad range of business departments which was applicable to many different disciplinary backgrounds. All of the activities were enjoyable especially those which had more hand on experiance.
Nice friendly people, good sense of a really positive company culture. All staff worked with seemed really friendly and all questions answered. Stayed as a group during the week and was a good networking opportunity to meet people from across the country in similar positions to me. Overall a great experiance.
As the experiance was only a week the training given was very limited. However during the week interview skills and application support was given to the help aid further development in the future. They also allocated time for work shadowing which was an investment into my personal knowledge of the industry and I feel I learnt a lot.
I think the insight week was extremely informative to what it would be like to work at the company as aside from getting full time employment from them you could not ask for more information on all the different job roles available and how the company operated. They also gave a great insight into how the industry as a whole operates.
As the insight week allowed us to explore all the different varying roles and department in the company it was a good overview to how the company operates and how the employees enjoy their work. All the employees seemed to enjoy their work and this was reflected in their presentations and attitudes.
I think without this insight week my knowledge of the construction industry as a whole as well as the different role possibilities would be extremely limited. After visiting mace it has opened my eyes up to the opportunities and possibilities for me even though I may not be doing a degree directly related to construction.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed for my expenses to travel the the different sites we needed to go to but I was not reimbursed for my travel there or any expenses for the week I had to pay to get to and stay in central London. This would mean it's not an experiance accessable for everyone.
The whole week was centred around networking with various people of different roles within the firm and we were encouraged to meet and question as many different people possible. The main focus for this was around meeting people who had joined the firm on graduate schemes, as that is what is expected of us if we decide to take it up.
There weren't particular networking events aside from one lunch where we were joined by people from the graduate scheme. Other lunch times we could approach other workers while we ate but there was not a huge amount of opportunity to meet employees on a more social basis.
Yes, there was a very large amount of social activities across the board for employees to get involved in as well as their own supported charity where they can take part in helping a range of volunteering initiatives as well as taking a day off to volunteer once a year.
yes, I think as it is a first year opportunity it is less heard of and applied for but I would definitely recommend that anyone who may be interested in a job related to the construction industry attend as not a huge amount of construction firms offer a similar experiance.
