About You
We received fantastic insight into the roles we would perform within the Markets division. The highlight was definitely the trading floor rotation that gave us a real sense of what it means to be a J.P. Morgan employee and serve clients' interests at the forefront of global markets. 10 out of 10!
Everyone you spoke to acted as though you were an asset to the firm. Each employee I spoke tried to ensure that I take as much as possible with me from the Spring Week. I have no doubt that these experiences will stand me in good stead as I progress in the financial world.
Following the plethora of presentations with seasoned Markets professionals, we were also allowed to spend two sessions on the massive trading floors at J.P. Morgan. I received guidance from literally every angle, whether HR or seniors bankers. I believe that I have learnt the correct fundamentals to progress much further, following this Spring Week.
I can now differentiate the roles within a Markets division far better, particularly between Sales, Trading and Structuring. We received presentations on all of the above. At the moment it is still difficult to see which particular asset class is best suited to me. However, I am certain I can find my place at JPM. This week has broadened the perspective with which I view my degree studies, and made me realize that a mix of interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity and sincerity go a long way in making it in Markets.
The Company
To put it curtly, fantastic. We could never find a time to simply doze off. The schedule kept us on our toes, as there was no time to rest on our laurels. Nonetheless we still found ample time for social events, and received enough breaks to refresh our minds. Fantastic all round!
Initially many participants were rather anxious, believing that we were all in competition with one another. As the week progressed many participants realized that JPM wants to see candidates that can work in teams and communicate genuinely and sincerely with others. In the end, I got to know many participants well and I hope to see some next Summer.
Many external speakers were also hired to guide us not only on the path through the Spring Week but beyond that. It was not just about forming the perfect intern class for JPM but also about learning how to present, read the FT and interpersonal skills. These are all skills that transcend industries.
This was mainly exhibited through the Trading Floor rotation, as this would be (ideally) my place of work in the near future. Furrthermore, networking events with senior management gave us the opportunity to ask questions regarding work-life balance, successful characteristics in JPM star employees and so many other questions that one may not ask in public.
I understood the culture at JPM to be more collaborative than at other banks. I believe that the culture is underpinned by a desire for excellence and teamwork - two values that JPM exhibits each and every day when it serves its clients. It is a culture that makes you want to go out there and work to the best of your abilities.
It basically reaffirmed my desire to enter into the Markets division of a major investment bank. In that sense it was extremely valuable. Moreover, I created a fantastic network amongst my peer groud and employees at JPM that will stand me in good stead going forward, particularly in terms of future opportunities arising at the bank.
Everything Else
Our accommodation was covered by JPM. Furthermore if we came from far the plane and train tickets were also covered. In terms of food, we received breakfast, lunch and dinner in JPM or around Canary Wharf. On a personal note, there were no heavy costs that I had to carry myself, all taken care of by JPM.
