About You
I found the spring insight week very enjoyable, as it gave a lot of information on different parts of the bank. In addition to this, with many networking events, you were able to speak to people in the field that interests you most; for example if you wasn’t interested in asset management you weren’t forced to ask questions on this. The only thing I would say is at the beginning there are many PowerPoints throughout the day, which can become difficult to concentrate on the fifth consecutive one maybe mix in some of the activities here.
The employees were really helpful and open to explain anything, understanding that people on the insight week were at different stages in knowledge. Also, they were welcoming to meeting whenever they were free, so if you didn’t have time in the session/rotation to ask all of your questions, arranging a coffee meeting was usually an option.
A lot of support was given, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions at all times. The HR staff are very helpful if you have specific recruitment questions along with project mentors who give you a lot of support and push your team to come to a good solution. The one-to-one rotations are particularly helpful as it gives a chance to see exactly the work that they do daily and ask questions specific to their role.
The skills developed were beyond just academics, the talks on how to present and come across as confident helped me a lot and I will think of these whenever I am put in a situation outside of my comfort zone. On the information side, it helps me to understand Markets in my economics degree better but I would say this will be more useful in interviews and when doing future internships.
The Company
The insight was very organised and structured well from the beginning. The presentations were clear with the speakers very prepared, some with activities for us. Networking events were well organised with different employees, from each section of Markets each time making it easy to access a range of people. Also there was optional time allocated to work on group projects, which I think was really useful.
The atmosphere was incredible, all of the people doing the insight were so friendly and everyone spoke to everyone. HR were so enthusiastic which helped to make everyone feel positive about their future career. The employees were so helpful and honest, and genuinely seemed like they wanted us to do well and work with them in the future.
They invested a lot of time in ensuring we fully understood concepts and the different roles in the bank. On the personal training side, there were multiple sessions on confidence, interviews, presenting, etc which I think has helped me grow and feel a lot better applying for future internships.
The insight gave good knowledge on what the employees exactly do daily, and in specific what J.P. Morgan do to aid progression through the company. I wouldn’t say you get a full feel of what the role would be like full time, as with any job I don’t think you can fully understand until you’ve done a bit of the work yourself; however I know this cannot be helped.
The insight helped a lot to see how the employees work together and how teamwork throughout is encouraged, where you are pushed to your best ability. Also hearing the social sides which are encouraged, for example the sports teams, helped me to understand how J.P. Morgan doesn’t solely care about your role, they also care about the employees wellbeing.
The insight week confirmed for me, that I would like to work in this industry and specifically at this company. The content given helped to see which type of person fits into each role and gives interesting information on what exactly affects their activities daily; which has allowed me to see which section I’d like to apply to.
Everything Else
Lunch and breakfast is provided most days, with snacks and drinks normally brought round in the evening for dinner too. The apartments which were paid, were very spacious and luxurious; I really enjoyed my stay there. Travel cards are also provided meaning there is nothing I had to pay for during my week.
There were many networking events throughout the week, these all included different employees at different levels in their career (from MD to summer interns) from different sections of the bank, meaning you got a range of people to speak to easily. The networking events were usually during lunch hours which made it still a useful time.
The networking opportunities were brilliant, really helped me get a down to earth view of the job rather than any jargon you see online. Many different refreshments are provided and the venues were spacious enough to just walk over to different people without feeling crowded. Social events were also very enjoyable, speaking to the other people on the insight week was lovely and getting to know them in less of a formal setting!
There was no presentations or talks that really gave information on the opportunities outside of work at J.P. Morgan, which I think could’ve been helpful. However, I did hear from networking with the employees about the gym provided and how the bank have their own sports teams which helped to show me that there are other things available here outside of work.
I would recommend this insight, even if you were only considering going into this industry. It gives a true insight into how it is split up and which roles suit different personalities. It also a great opportunity to develop confidence presenting and applying to future jobs, with extra knowledge and experience. Also with the insight week on my CV I really think it will help my career prospects, as it shows I have interest and experience in this role.
