    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really did enjoy it very much. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] were very welcoming in answering any questions we had. The schedule was organised yet flexible. Five days was just the right amount to get to know the fellow interns and share our experiences. I learned alot from both the spring week and the other interns.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Having various senior members give talks everyday gave a sense that the company really valued its fresh interns. To add to that, there were various times we could engage in conversations in one-one-one settings or in a small group such as in networking sessions. The amount of care given to each individual was very much appreciated.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • We had work shadowing sessions (2 in fact) where we were put in groups of 3 to make it a very personal guidance system. In terms of non-work related support, the program coordinators were always ready to answer any queries and help willingly. It was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In terms of soft skills, I learn how to work in teams with members who are all very intelligent but have different ideas. It definitely helped in how I approach problems in the future. In terms of my degree studies, one of my workshadowing experiences helped me in the sense that the employee had mentioned elements of Statistic he used as a Data Scientist, which I am currently using. So, that was very helpful.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight was extremely well structured. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] were sure to stick to the timings so there is minimum wasted time but also very flexible to ensure we get obtain the best experience. An example is a speaker session going overtime because of many questions raised by the fellow interns. They will allow ample time so we are satisfied yet still stick to the program times.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Everybody was very passionate about Technology and was very willing to share the knowledge they knew. We were all serious in doing work but when it came to breaks or outside work times, I think we all got to know each other very well as people rather than just work-related stuff.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was an IDG Workshop which was helpful in getting to know yourself and how one works in teams of people with different characteristics. The networking, group work and so on developed my soft skills. In terms of technical skills, there was not much in that area. It is somewhat understandable as there were many people with a non-tech background.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • We had a big networking sessions with recent graduates of the company with various roles. They were very happy to speak about their roles and were very candid about it. The work shadowing sessions helped very much, although it wouldn't if you were assigned to someone who was not working in the field you were interested in.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The Barclays' values were mentioned numerous times throughout the five days. It was clear the company culture was ingrained throughout the company. The culture was clearly seen directly and indirectly through the employees at the company. All their answers were very honest and I had a clearer picture.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The speaker sessions were not that helpful in deciding which part of technology I was hoping to work in, but the work shadowing sessions were definitely more helpful. They were more personal and I also got lucky as I was under an employee who was doing something I was looking into.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Everybody received a one off compensation that was adequate at the end of the spring week. I did not have receipts for my tube travel (which was near so I did not need travel expenses) but those who did, did receive reimbursement. It was relatively simple to ask for it.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There was such opportunites every day of the week. We met employees from senior ones to graduates. Although, I would say that talking to the graduates were more helpful as they could relate more with the process of employment as well as how they got to their position. Whereas for the senior members, they were very helpful in clarifying questions about technology in their respective divisions.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The employees were all very friendly and approachable. Talking to any one of them was very engaging and I learned many things, including life tips as well as what they do in Barclays. We were given ample time but the time does fly as they were all very nice to talk to especially since they were taking time out of their schedules.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I did ask this question but unless you ask, it was not emphasized very much. They have clubs or societies you can get involved in as an employee ranging from sports or any other interests. They also have volunteer activities though I am not sure how active they are or the specifics.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes, absolutely. Barclays spring week is the place where anyone is welcomed to ask any question and speak our thoughts in a very candid environment. I learned many things while meeting very interesting people, both in Barclays as well as my fellow interns. They also had an interview at the end of the week for the following year's summer internship.
