About You
I truly enjoyed this 3-day insight programme. It was challenging, innovative and people really cared about you. I really had the feeling that everybody has been working so hard to realize every event. Moreover, I had the opportunity to get involved in the organizational culture and mindset of people working in one of the most dynamic and interesting companies in the world.
I felt really valued and I think that nobody can say otherwise. Every single person working there was more than happy to respond to our questions, as well as to share with us their thought about the company and what it feels like to work there. They have been treating us as future colleagues.
Every detail was explained the first day, we all knew what we're going to do, what time and so on. In every activity, we had someone who explained to us what was expected of us and for coding challenges, we had the opportunity to have great guidance. The recruitment team, moreover, was there for any necessity.
I'm not coming from a computer science course of studies so I have been struggling with such a ''technological'' insight, but on the other hand, during coding activities, I was the one who learned the most because I was starting from almost zero. The work in a team was a great idea because you work with people with different skills and the winning team is the one where each member complements another.
The Company
We had long hours ( usually from 8.30 to 18) filled with events and activities and then, two evenings over three had a social event after the activities. It's a really concentrated insight but you definitely don't have time to get bored. We all enjoyed social events too because they were a great way to socialize and meet people working there who were always happy to speak with us.
The atmosphere in J.P.Morgan in the technology department was extremely relaxed. You could see that from how everybody was dressed : totally casual outfits. Employees had also this shared kitchen where they would go for a break and this looked a lot like a family place. Many of the employees I've been speaking to were actually truly happy about the atmosphere in J.P. Morgan and those who left often came back.
I think they invested a lot for us. Many people have been working with us and spent their time with us, to train us, to teach us what cybersecurity was or how to code. People working there emphasized how much J.P. Morgan invests in you even after you've been hired.
People in J.P.Morgan were extremely friendly, they all showed us that working there means being part of a great family which is not really what you would expect from a big corporation, but it was a really friendly environment. Everybody was so optimistic and hopeful about the fact that our young group of first year students will come to work there.
As I said, I am not coming from a computer science background so this insight helped me to be more aware of this world and more interested to get to know it better. If I happen to work in technology, I would definitely choose J.P. Morgan in Glasgow as my workplace.
Everything Else
I came from Milan to Glasgow, so my flight was paid, as well as the hotel for anybody who did not live in Glasgow. Moreover, every expense for public transportation was reimbursed. Breakfast was included in the hotel service and both lunch and dinner were given by J.P. Morgan, as well as the social night at bowling.
There were plenty of opportunities to meet senior employees or people working there. I mainly met interns during work shadowing who showed us what was like to work there and spoke about their current projects, or how do they work in a team or manage situations. During one of the social events, we also met people who have been working there for many years, who came from different backgrounds and had a lot to say about their experience.
The first networking event was at Bowling and it was amazing. I met a lot of people there because after a long day, instead of staying alone in your hotel room, you have the opportunity to have fun with people coming from all the corners of the world and listen to their stories, as well as eating dinner and having drinks together.
We have been asking employees about different things and they all agreed that hours were really flexible. They could ofter work from home and their main target was get projects done so they didn't really follow a strict routine. Many of them have been travelling a lot or have been studying even after being hired.
I'll definitely recommend this insight to anyone who is interested in having a look into what it's like working in a big firm or just wants to see some opportunities. A lot of people who works there have actually completed the Spring into Technology Programme so it's definitely a head start on your career.
