About You
I really enjoyed the insight programme, which lasted 3 days. These three days were filled with lots of activities and workshops. J P Morgan got an outside company to come in and do half a day of different soft skills workshops which was a definite highlight. I would definitely recommend.
The coordinators from student campus recruitment were all incredibly welcoming and friendly people, who didn't hesitate at all to make us feel welcomed. The only shortcoming I would say I found was with the organised social on the first evening, because there were no current employees of JP Morgan there, just the students.
We received a lot of guidance, from the time spent on helping us develop our soft skills, creating our own brand to promote, and how to network. This made me feel valued and supported. In the case study session, current JP Morgan staff were also present to aid us, which was great.
I really found the soft skills workshop incredibly helpful because it helped me become more confident in interacting professionally in networking sessions and get a greater sense of where I saw myself in my future career. We also got a great insight into working at the bank through work shadowing.
The Company
If we consider that this was the first year that this Spring Week has taken place in this particular division then I would say that the insight was really well organised. There was a great range of sessions covered throughout the three days, from work shadowing to networking to workshops.
In general, the atmosphere was reasonably bright and enthusiastic. On occasion the energy level potentially dropped slightly, particularly in a few dull panel discussions, but this was to be expected in a jam packed three days. Everyone was friendly (with only a few or two exceptions, although this is normal I think).
It was definitely a short time that I was there for (only 3 days) but in this time I felt that the firm put a lot of emphasis on helping me identify individual strengths and abilities. The workshops helped a lot with becoming a more informed individual in the professional workplace.
I really enjoyed work shadowing a few current graduates on the final day. This meant I was able to speak to people closer to my age/position and therefore more relatable perhaps. This carries over to the networking lunch with current graduates. The spring week helped me a good insight into life at the firm.
In my opinion, what was most helpful in allowing me to understand the company culture was definitely talking to both current graduates as well as senior members of the firm. However, I do still think it is difficult to really understand the company culture having only talked to a select handful of people.
Whilst events like the work shadowing helped give us interns an insight into the day to day work of the employees, I think there wasn't much help given to those people who decided that this line of business wasn't for them. The insight didn't give much information on other alternatives.
Everything Else
If your commute was more than a reasonable length, accommodation was provided alongside a travel card.
Plenty, from meeting current students on the grad scheme to senior employees.
Very good, from networking lunches to a social on the first evening. I do wish they had gotten current JP Morgan employees to come to the social, instead of it being just the students.
The insight ran a session on the various activities offered to anyone at the firm.
Yes, but only if they were relatively sure they wanted to do something related to this line of business.
