About You
very much so. i learnt a lot during the talks, which were given on a wide and interesting variety of topics, and it was a great opportunity to be able to shadow my buddy, enabling me to really understand the day to day life at citi. the team i joined were always supportive and willing to help.
as said above, my team gave me lots of time in order to explain what they were doing and the ins and outs of how banking worked, and this was not just the case for my manager and buddy, but all the team sitting near me. the speakers and HR team also did a great job of making us feel welcome and valued.
again, as said above, the people in the team I joined gave me lots of help, both on projects they'd set me and explaining the work they were doing. the HR team did a good job of checking up on people throughout the week to check that everything was as it should be.
unfortunately, the skills i learnt are unlikely to affect my degree, but will definitely give me a head start if i were to start a career in banking, both in terms of understanding the overall themes of how banking works, and in being prepared to undertake more precise tasks like valuations.
The Company
we were given a clear timetable of how the week would run, and it ran to that table throughout. the week had a good balance between work shadowing and talks to the whole group, which effectively broke up the days. it was nice to have the whole week to learn, rather than just 3 or 4 days.
excellent. all the students on the insight week made for good company, and the Citi employees all created a helpful and encouraging atmosphere, injecting their own energy into the week at the same time. there was an atmosphere that citi was investing in you, which was nice to be a part of.
as said above, i feel like they did invest in all of us. this is particularly because they gave us 1:1 time to talk to bankers working on live deals, and these bankers were happy to give up their valuable and sparse time to talk to us and teach us.
i was able to watch people doing their job in the flesh and talk to them about the projects they were taking part in, due to the fact that we had the work shadowing system, which gave me as good an idea as i could have gained in only 1 week.
the only way to understand that is to get out and meet people and talk to them as they do their job, and there were plenty of opportunities to do this in the work shadowing process, as well as the networking events which gave us a chat to ask people about what life was like working at citi.
it was great to not only learn the ins and outs of banking, but also to be given the opportunity to do little projects of my own, which gave me a sense of what working in banking would be like, which is definitely valuable content! it has strengthened my resolve all in all
Everything Else
there were many: we had two opportunities to attend networking evenings, where employees from a wide range of backgrounds attended and provided interesting conversation. we were also able to talk to many people whilst shadowing our buddies, and also meet the recruiters in various lunches and breakfast meals which were organised.
the people were from many different backgrounds and so all had different stories to tell, which made for interesting discussions. they were also all in different teams, there was no overlap as far as i could tell, which gave a good opportunity to find out more about the business and seek advice.
yes we were told about various citi initiatives which are run which employees can get involved in. banking takes up a lot of time, but it was good to see employees always getting saturdays fully off and most of sundays, which enables them to take part in a wide variety of activities.
yes absolutely, the week was very busy and great fun. the ability to work shadow makes it stand out from other weeks in terms of gaining real experience of what banking involves, and the culture of support and collaboration made citi a great place to do a spring week. i would definitely recommend!
