    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • You do learn a lot about what different divisions do on a daily basis, and meet many people, both from the bank and students from different university. The group exercises on the first day and debate on the last day were particularly fun, as you think about problems with different people.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Barclays talks about their fives values a lot: amongst the five, the first was respect. In the first day, I was told that throughout the week, I'd get to see that all employees uphold these values. However, during my assessment centre on the last day, my interviewer seemed disinterested and showed very little respect in my interview. Made me question about Barclays.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Whenever I needed help, I could always find support. The team responsible for the Spring Week were very friendly, and answered all our questions if and when we had them. During networking sessions, senior staff were also willing to answer very simple questions about the bank. They have been very helpful.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Generally, pretty well structured. However, the first day was very long (a 12-hour day!) and last day was very short. If it could be balanced better, i.e. days of normal length for all four days, it would have been much better. Also, had to make decision about what division on Thursday lunchtime, when we had little information about the Banking sector. I feel like this could be improved on.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Throughout the process, you will see that Barclays spend a lot of energy on developing essential skills that you would need in the industry. I feel like Barclays invest a lot in this, it is evident from the various group activities we have had. Also, from networking sessions, I found out that Barclays is very supportive of causes that affects you personally and is willing to help out.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Generally nice people and got to understand the firm a lot more. However, there were conflicting information at times. There was no one particular 'type' of person I saw working at Barclays, but a combination of. At the very least, it confirmed to me that Barclays will not be a bad company to work for. But whether this is where I definitely want to go, I could not tell from this experience I have had.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Very helpful. From someone with no finance background, I learnt a lot about how the different operations of divisions within the bank. On Thursday, we were all made to decide which division to go to, which allows you to think while in the process where your strengths lie and ultimately whether this is the right industry for you.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • £250 for four days. I believe travel and accommodation is paid for if you live outside of London (but I live in London, so I cannot attest to that statement). I feel like this is a very generous offer considering the fact that you are not actually working for Barclays in the short-term. Goes on to show how much they invest in people, I suppose.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • At the end of the first day, there was a networking session with people from different divisions of the bank. There were also networking lunches on the second and third day, allowing you to ask more about Marketing or Banking, whilst learning about it during the day. After panels, you are usually able to speak to the panellists and they might even invite you for drinks to discuss further about what they do.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • On the first day, I feel like there was a slight imbalance between people working in Markets and Banking. Generally speaking good, you get to meet people from all divisions and of all levels Occasionally had to fight for seats during networking lunches or that someone working for Barclays will steal your seat. This perhaps could have been arranged in a better manner.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
