    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had a wonderful year at IBM. The company has benefited me greatly with lots of opportunities to develop key skills and hopefully help me progress in the future. As well as allowing me to improve myself as a person with external opportunities such as volunteering. They are a huge company with lots of flexibility and different areas to explore.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They treated me as an equal as well as guiding me in how to become an established member of the team. A fun and social experience as well as an educational one, with a lot of laughs around the office as well as getting work done. I will definitely be keeping in touch with them.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • With an Early professionals manager, a task manager and a team of around 15 around me, I feel the support provided was to a high standard and I never felt alone or in too deep. This is something IBM offers throughout the company so being here means being well supported.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were days I had nothing but work on my mind but also days where it was very relaxed, this massively depends on the role here but nonetheless you can always ask for work when you have none and ask for help when times are tough and it is busy.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the opportunities to be a part of major UK wide projects, allowed to travel within my first month, be a part of big meeting with clients. Overall fantastic exposure, as well as working with those with huge responsibility and learning how they deal with it will be great experience for the future.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were many opportunities to improve my business skills and learn how to be a part of a major established company. In terms of my degree not huge amounts but the business experience is notable, It will most likely help me excel and hopefully help accelerate my career after my studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Nice atmosphere with lots of people around, all areas of the company surrounding thus you have an opportunity to network with people that you would not normally be able to interact with. A loud atmosphere with people talking on the phones and with one another so there is never a dull moment

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From the application to the end of the year, it has been extremely smooth and an efficient process. With constant communications there has not been a moment when I have not been aware what is going on with regards to my year. Having the good support system has helped with the organisation as if you do not know you can just ask.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invested vast amounts, allowing me to train myself in other areas of the business with shadowing, online training, lunch and learns, workshops etc. With approval with management which is usually quite easy to get you are able to train yourself with any new skills that will help the company from the vast learning materials available.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    International Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing especially with an award winning grad scheme like Consulting by Degrees. With the placement you able to chat to those on the schemes and understand the positives and perks of a job and with knowing the company so well it gives an advantage of having an insight in.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was an intern boat party, which is a great networking and social event. As well as having the opportunity to live with other interns as you are added in a Facebook group with others in your location. Lots of after work drinks and activities. You can definitely make some long term friends.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Portsmouth was very cheap and a student city thus the nightlife was decent and it being cheap allowed you to do more activities and be social more often. Being right on the coast in good weather was also a bonus. It's a different experience to more expensive other cities .

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Student city so lots of nights out, the weekends are always busy and a variety of clubs to choose from. The bar scene is not as good but you can get a cheap night out going to spoons or Yates' and then going out to one of the clubs very nearby

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of sports teams around the area, you have to look for them yourselves but there are so many around you are bound to find one that will suit you. As well as having Portsmouth FC about meaning on weekends you have a game to go to enjoy.
