The Role
The company works in a slow pace, the finance team is small so you can acquire knowledge from different parts of accounting. The work load was average but not as much as you would normally get at bigger firms. the placement was useful in a way, as it enabled me to know what I want and what I don't want from a business when I start a proper job
Colleagues are very appreciative with what you do, the communication between everyone in the office is very good, people appreciate any help that is given and the departments work well together. Colleagues are very friendly and approachable so you will feel valued wherever you go in the company as it is family orientated
I was working in the same office as my manager, the support I was given was not much as the assistant was more helpful in giving guidance as the manager would sometimes not know information. I had little guidance from the manager as there was a handover period with the previous intern, so anything that they learnt was passed on and management had little knowledge of what they did
the first and last weeks of the month were the busiest, but it wasn't so busy that you would need to do overtime. The weeks in-between wee not busy at all, it is a slow paced company so you get time to go through your work in a timely manner to make sure everything is correct
The responsibility that was given to me as an intern in the accounts department was very low, during the first half of my placement the work load was low and I had little responsibility of my work but as I got to know the company more the work load increased so there was more responsibility for me to have and more experience for me to take in
In the placement, it didn't really help me towards my degree as such as the daily tasks that I took on is like a recap for my college studying days when I first learnt accounting, even though I had exposure to the different accounting ways they are not really put into practice
The Company
The atmosphere in my office was like any other office atmosphere, it would be quiet at times and sometimes there will be small talk. There are days where the atmosphere was dull in the office but when you communicate with other people in different departments the atmosphere gets more lively so it depends which department you interact with
The organisation is a little bad, where it takes a long time to set up new people and they need months in advanced. IT department is in a different country so if there are any issues it will take a while for them to respond. Overall the organisation is quite poor
for personal training there were some online courses that have to be taken when you started at the company which will take about 2-3 days in the office. Throughout the year, there are a few courses that you get enrolled on which happen every 2-3 months and they can be from health and safety to accounting
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
there is not much room for future prospects as it is hard to move anywhere within the organisation as there is a need of specific skill set for each role but as it is a small company there is not much to offer for future prospects. It is highly unlikely you will get offered a job here after a placement has been done
The Culture
Within the company, they only employ 1 intern a year, so you do not get any interaction with fellow placement students. The social scene amongst the colleagues is very fun, there are events and pub drinks for different occasions and most of the office turn up, it is lively and everyone generally has a good time as there is no pressure to turn up to the events
The cost of living is relatively cheap as being in Swindon, renting prices are a little below average so it is about £300-£500 per month to rent a room. Transport is pretty expensive but there are plenty of buses and taxi's around, taking a bus is normally £2.10 for a single but a bus pass is cheaper if you do not have a car. Eating out and pubs are averaged price
The nightlife isn't too bad as you can go to 2 different parts of town, it depends where you start off at and where you go. I didn't go out for nightlife that often but places are generally free to enter and the drinks aren't too expensive. The area is mostly safe and secure
Yes, they have a sports and social club available within the company, activities for the sports and social club are held every last Thursday of the month where an activity is chosen to do for example volleyball. They do have a football 5 a side team which is done when they have enough players. There are a lot of planned activities for charity such as canoeing, bike riding, marathons etc
