    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Nomura. The main reason is that I was able to get as much assistance/guidance as I can in terms of my progression and self-development. I was also lucky enough to work on both development and business analysis therefore was exposed to many different sides of technology from my role.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Although I was still a little unfamiliar with my team culture at the beginning, I found that I fit in really well with my team as I was able to be myself and voice out my opinions without any trouble. My achievements were always acknowledged which led me to working even harder.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was constantly in communication with my manager throughout my placement year. I will have weekly meetings where I give updates on the projects I am working on, as well as voice out any problems I have been having or if I seek for comments to improve my work ethic. I find that I can always turn to my manager for assistance if needs be.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I have to admit that during my first few months of my placement I was still finding my way around my work, what I have to do, and how I have to do things. I was also still unsure about whether I’m allowed to do this or that – but after knowing the applications I’m working on and after learning fundamental skills for my role, I was able to pursue more tasks and help out in issues within my line of work. So overall, on a daily basis, I don’t think I’m always strapped for time, but I’ll always have work to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My responsibility the past year has increased gradually. Of course, when I started, I still needed guidance when hosting meetings, for example, but now I feel as though I can manage an issue on my own, and if there is a problem I can raise it with my manager. I do believe that responsibility comes with time therefore I'm not expecting to be the one pulling the strings.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that the skills I have learnt during my year can be carried out even after I leave. I have learnt fundamental business and communication skills necessary for working in other companies, as well as learnt new programming languages that I can apply to my degree as well as/or my career in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere within the technology department, in my opinion, is relaxing. Everyone is mindful, and eager to teach you what they know within their line of work if asked. I think that everyone I’ve met have been very inclined in assisting you with what you may be having trouble with, therefore making my experience a lot more pleasant.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of my placement has been amazing. I knew what I was going to be working with before I started, and I was always informed with any news related to my internship from the HR. There has been no disorganisation the past year regarding my placement, therefore it’s say to say that it was fully handled well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My manager, team, the department, was always for self and career development. I was always given opportunities to improve myself by attending internal/external training was well as online training – which the department has put a lot of effort in. Saying this, it has made it easy for me to look for ways to progress myself, and with my manager it was easy for me to know how to improve.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very. I have shadowed many different roles in across the technology department and each role has been very different to the last. Of course, a role that may seem very interesting to one may not be interesting to another but I can definitely see myself working in different areas. In terms of career progression, it seems very appealing. As a person who is career-driven, I think that Nomura is a great company to develop a career in.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely. I believe that there have been man events within the company that enabled colleagues and interns to get together and socialise therefore I found it very easy to network with people across the company. Nomura is also big on charity, so charity events within the company also assist in the opportunity to network. That being said, HR also organises many events to help interns catch up with another if needs be.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Nomura is based in the City of London, and the City of London isn't cheap. Of course, everything is slightly more expensive than rural areas, but I never considered that as a problem. London has been amazing, as there are a variety of niche areas such as restaurants and markets that one can explore. I think I'd definitely pay the price if it means experiencing something great.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I've never 'gone out' around the City of London, but definitely outside of it. London nightlife is amazing as there are always events happening everyday. And they're also not too far away from each other so there is bound to be another event a few minutes away. I think most event don't finish until after 4 in the morning, therefore there is definitely time for everything.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were already many activities happening within the company (ie charity events). but there are definitely ways to get involved in external activities. For example, being part of the LGBT community gave you the chance to attend to external events with different banks, or even team events that happen outside of work.
