The Role
I enjoyed pklacement greatly. The team I’m in made good friends with me and there was always a very sociable atmosphere. I enjoyed what I was doing on a day to day basis and have learnt a lot of skill relevant to my course throughout my year. I’ve also enjoyed having the opportunity living in London
I felt valued by my colleague and other staff, because I meet real stakeholders throughout the year who used my work and set requirements and asked for improvements.. I also became specialized in areas which my team were not and this me the chance to be called on for assistance.
I think the support I got was strong from my direct manager throughout the year. I also got support from other people in the company (such as the community and ethics board) who looked out for the well being of other interns. I was also given a mentor who could help me throughout the year.
I felt like I always had work throughout the placement. At the start of the year I did feel overwhelmed by it, however as the year went on, I adjusted to the level and would find myself bored without it. The amount of work I’ve been given has allowed me to progress quite quickly in areas and given me a lot of practice.
At the start of placement I obviously wasn’t given that much, but as the year went on and my skills improved, I was given more and more responsibility. Even if I had made a mistake, my team did not hold it against me and saw it as a learning opportunity more than anything.
My placement feels like it is very relevant to my degree because of the amount of programming I get to do on a daily basis. I do far more on placement then I do at university and because of this I think I will go back to university a much stronger student.
The Company
The team I was in was very close with each other so there was usually a lot of conversation going on. Also between the other interns there was quite a community, which made the entire experience a very social area to be in. The office also didn’t seem as strict as I thought it would be and was in general fun.
The team I was in had a history of taking in placement students for a year/10 months, and so they were prepared with what to do with me. I felt like the placement experience was at all times organised, from both the HR side as well as inside my team.
I felt like the team I was in invested in me insofar as they taught me useful skills for coming back into the same team in the same role. There were also several training courses throughout the year in various areas of the bank. HR also organised several IT specialist sessions at the start of the year which helped me understand more about IT in the work place.

It would be very appealing to me to come back and work at Nomura in the team I’m currently in. Even if I was invited to be back in my team, I have still found it a great company to work at with lots of perks compared to other people I have known on placement at different companies.
The Culture
As I was living and working in central London, it was obviously a very expensive place to live in. Also the food at work wasn’t subsidized which was a bit disappointing, however it was easy enough to pack my own lunch. It was also a similar story with the cost of outside of work experiences, but all in all, I feel like I managed to experience a lot of things despite this.
There was a strong social scene in my team, we frequently went out for drinks together. With the other industrial placement students there was also a strong social scene, we often met up for things such as lunch and talked about our time at the company and other things we got to experience on placement.
The nightlife was very strong and varied in the area I was staying in. Although being at work more than I had ever been used to in my life before, I still had energy on the weekend to experience it as well as other slightly tamer activities in my local area.
There were many events which happened throughout the course of my stay at Nomura which encouraged me to get involved with members of the company I would not otherwise get to meet. To name a few would be: Charity Quizzes, Football Tournaments, Boat Parties a table tennis club, and not to mention the many opportunities for drinks.
