The Role
Really good experience, learnt lots of invaluable skills and met loads of interesting people
By the time I left I really felt like one of the team and not just the student
There was constant support from my supervisor and the rest of the team as and when I needed it. I didn't feel under pressure to know how to do everything first time, and people were happy to take the time to go through tasks with me.
Although the work was interesting, I found at times that there wasn't enough or at least enough variety, especially when waiting for someone else to complete a task before I could move on with my work.
I completed the majority of work independently, however with the nature of the business, all work has to approved and counter signed. There were a number of smaller unregulated tasks that i was solely responsible for.
Over my year I developed a great number of skills, both technical and soft. I would strongly recommend doing a placement year purely for this as the skills that you learn on placement are invaluable
The Company
My office was fairly quiet especially during busy periods. I tended to listen to the radio or my ipod alot. However the people in the office were very friendly and when they werent as busy there was a lot more conversation
GSK are very prepared for placement students, as they take on a huge number every year. There is a number of opportunities to see different parts of the business and to meet other students
Over my year I attended a number of training courses and conferences alongside the rest of my department, as well as few at the beginning to bring my technical skills up to speed
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I would happily go back to GSK as it is a fantastic company, however I'm not sure the role I was in was the one for me
The Culture
There was a fantastic social between the students, I lived with a number of them, and the rest lived very close. We spent most of the time outside of work together. I also played football with a number of my colleagues from across the site.
It is not the cheapest place in the world, as there are no other students (except placement students) although the social club onsite had some good drinks offers
Ware is not a big town, however there are lots of pubs/bars. We used to go out in Hertford for a better night out.
GSK is such a big a company there is lots of opportunities to get involved outside of work but within the organisation. There is plenty to do around Ware also
