The Role
My placement year at IBM has been a great learning experience. Right from day one of the placement, I was doing a demanding day job, interacting with IBM’s biggest clients on a daily basis and doing work that really mattered. Apart from the basic job role, I also got a multitude of opportunities to giveback to the society and be part of various community events. I also got to shadow several people within the business and got several networking opportunities throughout the year as well. The various training and development opportunities have helped me to achieve IBM certifications and badges both within and outside my job role. Overall, it has been a great year and has given me a wealth of opportunities to build a strong foundation for my career. I would recommend a placement year at IBM to anyone looking for a challenging and intellectually stimulating work experience.
Every intern is treated equally to other IBMers and is valued just like any other employee in the company. IBM is all about it's collaborative work culture so they always are open to new ideas and creativity and value each and every employee and strive to bring out their best.
The culture in IBM is professional and friendly. All of my supervisors have been very friendly with me and were always approachable. You are encouraged to ask questions if there are any. They also give you feedback consistently which helps to transform you into a better professional over the year.
I have been part of a demanding and rigorous job role at IBM. From the first day, I was doing a real job that really mattered and interacted with IBM's biggest client on a day to day basis. But apart from this we were equally encouraged to take part in external events.

This role also gave me an exposure and training on key technologies like Databases, Web Servers, Code support, Linux, Networking,Security, HTML, Data Visualisations and the Cloud which will definitely be useful in any technical role in the future. It has also greatly enhanced my customer skills and has made me technically strong.
The Company
Diverse, inclusive, collaborative and approachable - these are the perfect words to describe the work culture and environment at IBM.
The whole placement year was very well structured and designed in a way to make sure that students make the most out of their year at IBM. We had 3 reviews in the year where we could share what we have done thus far and also express any concerns that we might have. This helps to ensure that we make the best out of our year here. They also arrange several useful events for us throughout the year.
Countless opportunities both within and outside the job role in terms of training, development, certifications and badges which helps us to develop ourselves. You are able to learn new skills that are not even related to your role. You can also study for IBM certifications and take the exams during your placement year. You can also attend several workshops put together by IBM to help us develop professionally.

Working from home
Placement students definitely have an upper hand when compared to people applying from outside as we already have proved ourselves in the company and also get to apply for graduate schemes even before the applications open to the rest of the applicants from outside IBM. We can also get internal IBM-ers to endorse our application. Depending on how well you fared in your placement, you will also then be able to skip the other stages and directly go to the Assessment Centre stage or the Final interview. These factors give the placement students an edge over the external applicants!
The Culture
Yes absolutely! We had various team events which was awesome.
London is generally more expensive than other UK cities but we do get a higher salary if we are based at London.
Endless opportunities in terms of giveback, shadowing, mentoring, training and development such as hosting careers fairs, conducting mock assessment centres at Universities, conducting technical workshops at different schools, etc.
