The Role
Great place to work for. Plenty of training available very friendly staff and plenty of opportunities to grow yourself as a person. I was able to see what new development work went into launching new features within a website. I was also able to learn more about Agile software development methodology.
It is a real job. Everything that you do will count towards the companies success. People anywhere in the company were happy to help out with their specific fields. Colleagues were approachable and friendly all the time. I was a key part of the team that I was put in and felt valued within the team.
My Manager was very helpful and understanding throughout the placement. He was happy to help when I didn't understand something. There was a lot of support from everyone here at Vauxhall from anything personal to technical related queries there is always a person to answer any questions you may have.
Depending on each day I was occupied all day and days flew past in a blink of an eye. I was responsible for 35 websites and if any issues were detected for those websites I was responsible to raise the issue and have someone from the development team working on the issue.
During the start of placement responsibility was gradually passed onto me to look after issues and raise any incident tickets. I was also given the task to lead meetings and to gather requirements from business colleagues. I was also tasked with adhoc tasks on the daily basis to look into enquiries from the business.
Received training such as Safe driving, Dignity at work and Presentation training all these have helped me during the year. I have also developed technical skills that I learnt in University and was able to further develop these skills here at Vauxhall. There were also monthly student meetings which helped to raise any issues if we had any.
The Company
The atmosphere within the office was friendly and everyone was approachable. When it came down to having jokes with the colleagues they were up for it but when we all had to concentrate on our daily tasks then it was just mouse clicking and keyboard typing that you could hear within the office.
Placement was well organised with a 2 week hand over period from the last undergraduate that I was replacing. These two weeks were very intense and full of information which did seem a bit daunting at the start. I had my daily checklist setup so I knew what to do each morning and get each item ticked off.
The company invested a lot of time in developing our technical skills and we were also let to develop skills our selves. There was also opportunity to shadow someone for a day in a different part of the organisation which would give someone the insight of what goes on in that world of Vauxhall.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Currently due to the PSA take over from GM future employment of new staff is looking unlikely but as a place to work for it is great and I would consider coming back to work for Vauxhall after graduation. I may consider choosing a different position from a Business Analyst that would involve more technical skills.
The Culture
There was some social events during placement with other undergraduates. There seemed to be a lack of interest in going out for social events within the IT department although there were multiple occasions were things were setup such as Gokarting so we can all socialise. Overall it was a good balance.
It was not too expensive to go to socalise with others as Vauxhall had many places where we would get discounts on food or drinks within the Luton area.
Didn't really have a nightlife after handover week.
There were some opportunities to get into activities outside of work but as we were all busy most of the time not many people have attended.
