The Role
I really enjoyed working for the NHS as part of my placement, as it allowed me to really put the skills i learnt at uni into a real life situation. I felt like i was a valued member of the team and learnt so much throughout my time on placement.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, and as part of my placement i was asked to help develop some processes which helped me feel like my ideas were appreciated. As a result of feeling valued i was able to develop my skills a lot more than i would of if i felt under valued.
I was given a high level of support and guidance by my supervisor and always felt like i had someone to turn to if things seemed tough. I never felt like i was on my own and if i needed time out or a break then this was managed well.
I felt like i was really busy and got involved in a lot of projects. These projects allowed me to develop my working practice and help me to learn more about the role. On a daily basis these jobs seemed quite stressful, but i was able to learn how to manage this.
I was given a lot of responsibility, a lot more than i thought i would at the level i am at in my career. This really opened my eyes and because of this i feel more confident to take on new responsibilities in the future if given the opportunity to.
I used a lot of my knowledge that i learnt at uni to apply it to my work. In this profession it is essential that you have a good knowledge base of different areas so i was able to really see how this was used in real life work beyond academia.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly and i was able to make friends quickly. There were so many opportunities for me to make friends and feel that i was part of the team. The contacts that i have made, i am still in contact with now, and it was such a positive part of my role.
This placement was set up really well and it felt very organised. There were times at the start where i didn't really know what i was doing, but this changed after i settled into the role a bit more and grew in confidence. After a while, i got into a bit more of a routine.
There were a lot of opportunities for development. However the only bad point for this is that it was self funded, obviously I was a student so this was difficult to manage if there were some continued professional development courses that i felt passionate about attending. However, there were also some free ones which i managed to attend.
I would be very keen to consider future employment prospects within the organisation and after i finish my degree i will continue to work in this area as a result of my experiences within my placement. I hope to return and enjoy my job as much as i have enjoyed my placement.
The Culture
Not really no, as i was working with a lot of colleagues who had worked there for many many years. So there wasn't a lot of opportunities to go out and attend socials with people who were at the same level as me. Although this didn't really matter as i made new friends anyway.
I was living at home so this cost felt like it was non existent! However, i appreciate that living in this area would of been difficult to maintain costs while working for an unpaid placement. I was just lucky because i didn't really have any outgoings in terms of money.
The night life was really good, although i didn't go out much. I have heard a lot from friends who live in the area and they have recommended a few places for me to go to which i have taken on board. I would recommend the area for the nightlife.
There were so many opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work and i really enjoyed this when i was able to get that chance. Unfortunately, i worked full time so couldn't get involved in as many as i liked but I do know that there were a lot of things going on.
