The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my work placement, it was struggling at times, with often quite late nights but it was a fantastic experience. The breadth of experience I've acquired here is invaluable.
I felt extremely valued. The work I do makes a direct business impact, this responsibility and trust is exactly what'd I want in this industry.
My manager has been my mentor throughout my placement, if I have any questions she will be there to answer it. Working within IBM also means you have a massive network that you can reach out to should you get stuck.
I was very busy, much more than other interns due to the specifics of my role. This was a great experience but given you're on an interns pay, working until midnight did have its downfalls.
I literally was running the show at one point for 2 weeks. Of course the responsibility you gain is dependent on the type of employee you are, and how much you dedicate yourself to the success of the company.
The simple soft skills like timekeeping, communication, organisation will be helpful in my degree but that is not why I did a placement. This placement will assist me massively when applying to a graduate job as for example, I can now talk about 1000 times I've worked in a team.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly, I was based in North Harbour where there isn't loads going on compared to somewhere like Southbank.
I don't think you can work for a company of IBM's size and not have a well set up work placement, it was well organised and structured. The only downfall was again being in North Harbour, I missed out on some of the action.
You're constantly learning, there's classes and workshops you can attend (albeit via webex). The company definitely invests time and money into you, but they do expect a result, and why wouldn't they?
Very appealing, IBM's graduate scheme looks fantastic and I'm applying back, hopefully I'll be successful!
The Culture
As I said previously, it was alright, it wasn't as good as it would have been in Southbank
Quite cheap, Portsmouth is good and there's a good social life as it's not too far from Portsmouth uni
Portsmouth uni nightlife is quite good, there's a few clubs/bars and a lot of nice pubs in Southsea, definitely worth a visit.
There wasn't loads for my awareness but I lived a little bit out of Portsmouth so probably didn't seize the opportunities as much as I could have had I lived closer.
