The Role
Great opportunity to learn about the firm and how an audit works in practice.
Felt included and each member of staff made an effort to introduce themselves and chat to you. Plenty of opportunities to put your views across and social events enabled you to get to know your work mates better.
Really had a good line manager, was kept up to date with everything that was planned for me. Also each audit manager was very helpful. Each had different styles but they all give me advice and help to improve both my technical knowledge and knowledge of the GT clients.
To be honest, you can run out of things to do, but if you ask around the office then you will find something to do. This can be a bit of a awkward because I didn't want to feel like I was annoying others in the office when they were doing work. The other staff were always helpful though, they understood your situation and made an effort to find you something to do.
Given the opportunity to do some audit testing, speak to the client, submitting your own time sheet etc Always made to feel like your part of audit team. I would say you have similar responsibilites to that of a 1st year graduate.
I can honestly say the experience was a real eye opener. I learned a loads about the whole audit process. It was explained to me how the audit is set up, then by conducting the testing and fieldwork you get an insight into what the audit function actually involves. I worked on a property company, electrical engineering company, a mining company as well as a call centre. Each of these businesses was different and had variety of risks attached to them. So for example Fixed assets was a big risk in a property firm, where as stock was a important component of risk in an engineering firm. From this I was able to develop an understanding of how each of these risks were handled. This helps my study because my technical knowledge improved greatly meaning I have a better understanding of accounting as a whole. Also by giving me an chance to learn about what to expect when I start my graduate job, means that I will be so much better prepared than those who have not done an internship. Furthermotre, GT offers a presentation skills course which is a good chance to improve your skills and provides ideas about techniques which you could use to make your presentations better and more interesting. This has helped with my uni presentations.
The Company
Good atmosphere between employees. Good bit of banter.
Excellent. Given timetable at the start of internship detailing all my jobs. Was in the actual office about 3 days out of 6 weeks. Was always out at a clients.
Presentations skills course, insight day to learn about different service lines and appraisal which helped highlight areas for personal development.
